Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – "The 2019 Matallana is a blend of 85% Tinto Fino with some 15% other varieties such as Valenciano (Bobal), Navarro (Garnacha) and even white Albillo. 2019 was a very classical vintage with power, concentration and plenty of tannin, and the wine should develop and benefit from extended time in bottle. The wine feels very young and primary, with integrated spices from the élevage in oak, a medium to full-bodied palate, powerful and concentrated but very balanced. As I said in previous years, it's a Ribera like the ones from yesteryear! 18,676 produced with the selected grapes from 21 hectares of vineyards. It was bottled in July 2021."

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The higher-altitude vineyards like some of the ones used for the 2017 El Velado resisted the spring frost of the year better, and despite being riper, the wine has managed to keep its poise and balance. This comes from a plot at 600 meters altitude planted 80+ years ago. Like the rest, it fermented in open 3,000-liter oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in barriques and foudres for some 15 months. They have kept the Burgundian bottle here because there is more Garnacha. This is a little more straightforward, with less complexity compared with the other single-vineyard bottlings, a lactic touch and a chalky tannins. 1,524 bottles were filled in May 2019.

Primitivo Quiles Fondillón Vino Nobile ‘Gran Reserva’ Solera 1948 NV

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 1948 Fondillon Gran Reserva is drawn from a solera begun in 1948 but the wine is not fortified. Dark amber/brown in color, it has aromas reminiscent of an Amontillado sherry including almonds, ginger, dates, and assorted dried dark fruits. It finishes sherry-like but without the alcohol and the bite. There is nothing else quite like this uniquely styled dry wine.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – A similar blend of 65% Garnacha, 25% Cariñena and 10% Syrah resulted in a 2015 Salanques with higher ripeness and notably lower acidity, reflecting a much warmer and drier year. It's ripe and with lots of earthiness, mineral and characterful, with ripe fruit without excess, elegant tannins and a polished, sleek texture within the rusticity of the zone. - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – I was really looking forward to the 2016 Pingus in bottle, as the sample I tasted last time promised to be one of the best (if not the best!) Pinguses to date. Few (if any) vintages of Pingus have shown such integration of the oak, especially considering the wine is so extremely young. It has precision and symmetry, elegance and austerity à la Audrey Hepburn. This 2016 is like an updated version of the 1996, produced with a lot more knowledge that helped them find this purity, freshness and elegance. Peter Sisseck described it as seamless, and I could only agree. He also said that this is probably his ideal of what the wine from Ribera del Duero should be. The wine was kept in barrel for an extra couple of months and was finally bottled in August 2018; there were 8,100 bottles produced. It delivered all the sample promised, and perhaps a bit more...

Spanish wines captivate with their vast range and distinctive character. The country's varied topography and climate have fostered unique regional wine cultures, each boasting its own traditions and grape varieties. While many are familiar with the robust reds of Rioja and the crisp whites of Rias Baixas, Spain's viticultural wealth extends much further. The lush vineyards of Ribera del Duero produce deep, intense wines, whereas the coastal breezes of Jerez give life to the world-famous Sherry. Furthermore, regions like Bierzo and Navarra are gaining acclaim for their innovative approaches to winemaking. Every glass offers a journey through Spain's rich history, from ancient Roman vineyards to modern sustainable practices. As one navigates through the diverse offerings, the passion and craftsmanship of Spanish winemakers become evident. Celebrate the artistry and indulge in the myriad flavors that define the Spanish wine landscape.
Spanish wines are a perfect embodiment of the country's rich tapestry of culture, history, and geography. One of the most distinctive aspects of wines from Spain is the sheer diversity of its wine regions, each boasting unique climates, soil types, and grape varietals. From the coastal breezes of Rías Baixas to the sun-soaked terrain of Priorat, the range of microclimates ensures a myriad of wine profiles. Spanish wine production marries age-old traditions with cutting-edge innovations, producing bottles that resonate with both history and modernity. Not to mention, Spain is home to some of the oldest vineyards in the world, leading to deeply rooted vines that yield wines with exceptional depth and character. The utilization of indigenous grapes, such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Albariño, ensures that every sip speaks authentically of its Spanish origin.
Spain boasts an array of celebrated wines, each with its own story and flavor profile. Among the most iconic is Rioja, known for its robust, oak-aged reds primarily made from the Tempranillo grape. Close behind is Ribera del Duero, another region that has earned accolades for its intense and age-worthy reds. For white wine enthusiasts, Albariño from Rías Baixas offers crisp, aromatic flavors that dance on the palate, while Cava, Spain's answer to Champagne, sparkles with its effervescence and elegance. Last but not least, Sherry from Jerez is a fortified wine that ranges from dry to sweet, offering a unique taste experience unlike any other.
For those eager to embark on a Spanish wine journey, there are a few must-try bottles. Begin with a red Rioja Reserva, which offers a balanced palate of fruit and oak, showcasing Spain's affinity for aging wines. Transition to a white with an Albariño from Rías Baixas, celebrated for its zesty citrus notes and saline finish. For something sparkling, a Cava Brut is a delightful introduction to Spain's bubbly offerings. And for a taste of Spain's fortified heritage, a dry Manzanilla or rich Pedro Ximénez Sherry will surely captivate.
The best Spanish wines stand as testaments to the expertise and passion of Spanish winemakers. Renowned labels like Vega Sicilia from Ribera del Duero and Marqués de Riscal from Rioja have achieved legendary status among wine aficionados. In Priorat, the llicorella soil yields reds with remarkable minerality and depth. White wine lovers often herald the Albariños of Pazo de Señorans and Do Ferreiro. For sparkling enthusiasts, the Cavas of Recaredo and Gramona rise to the top with their complexity and finesse. Lastly, in the realm of fortified wines, the Sherries of Bodegas Lustau and González Byass represent the pinnacle of quality and craftsmanship.
