James Suckling – Limey and lightly mineral nose showing a hint of oyster shell to the green limey citrus and green peppercorns. Chalky and limey on the textured, light- to medium-bodied palate with a subtle spicy verve looming in the middle. Mealy and nervy at the end with a crisp, mouthwatering finish.
Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – “Clear, fresh and with cool, spicy aromatics on the nose, the 2021 Ried Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is juicy and elegant on the palate with hints of iodine. With a compact and persistent structure and fine, crystalline acidity, this is an intensely juicy and aromatic Veltliner with a salty, spicy, extremely stimulating finish. Tasted at Schloss Dürnstein.” - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate
James Suckling – “Full stone fruit aromas and a touch of ripe melon for a dry riesling that’s so sleek and racy. Wonderful balance in spite of the high acidity, giving this barely medium-bodied wine so much energy. Very long, samurai sword-like finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.” Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com
James Suckling – There’s a whole basket of yellow fruit here, including ripe apricot and King Alfonso mango, but there’s nothing loud about this beautiful high-end gruner veltliner, rather it opens slowly and steadily in the glass. Exact balance of ripeness and freshness, the latter accentuated by a note of tobacco leaf. Long and juicy, yet fresh and very precise finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JamesSuckling.com 2022
Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2021 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg offers a fascinating, clear and pure, deep, intense and mineral-rich bouquet with just-ripe fruit but also grassy and herbal aromas with a hint of smoke, dates and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied yet vital and fresh on the palate, this is a rich and intense but also pure, refined and very elegant Loibenberg with a dense body uplifted by fine mineral acidity. It’s an impressive, stimulating, saline and refreshing mineral and herbal GV with a sustainable and complex finish. Absolutely gorgeous Loibenberg. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate
The Wine Front – The legacy continues for this premier rendition of the variety. Biodynamic farmed. Softer than expected, a bit plush, not untoward in that way but has some bandwidth to it. Lots of green mango, tonic water, kohlrabi, fig and fennel here. Good scents, good flavours, lots of the latter and a supple finish. Round and smooth. A medium weight white that does the variety great justice.
James Halliday – The first grüner veltliner planted in Australia, and, as such, the first of many. It has a touch of varietal white pepper and a counterbalance of elegantly rounded stone fruit. Also an early mover in using biodynamic principles.
