James Suckling – This comes from two of the best blocks of this vineyard. Blackberry, blueberry and red fruits as well as ink and meat. Fresh flowers. Savory. Medium- to full-bodied. Round yet firm tannins that are so fine and silky. Caresses your palate in every way.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2021 Le Sol is spicy and detailed. Where the 2020 is open-weave and attractive, the 2021 is tighter, more focused and less "available" for obsessive unpicking (as I am wont to do for you, here). There's raw cocoa, blueberry, fi nely ground black pepper, orange peel, musk stick, layers of blackberry, mulberry, blood, ferrous notes and a hint of pencil shaving. This is a tightly coiled wine, one that has much unfurling to do, both in the cellar over time and in the glass today. Kaleidoscopic, savory and complex, this is another exciting wine from Craggy Range across the superstar 2020 and 2021 vintages. The exciting thing about the Le Sol is that there is SO MUCH flavor, without weight or density. It is pure concentration, but it leaves an impression of levity and litheness.

About This Wine

97 POINTS - The Real Review Huon Hooke
"Deep and bright purple-red colour with aromas of brown spices and dark fruits, black tea and pepper, the palate firm and full-bodied, with grip and abundant flavour, far from simplistic fruit, but a full-bodied and sumptuous red with fine powdery background tannins and tremendous length. Nicely balanced and drinks well already, although it has a bright cellaring future."

‘Le Sol’, French for ‘the soil’, is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation. The importance of the soil in the creation of this wine and the respect for the Rhone Valley were the leading elements for defining its name. Intensely hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep and dark Syrah with purple hues which represents the very best of the style for that year. ‘Le Sol’ is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish we call ‘Gimblett dust’.

Deepest red with vibrant purple hue. Expressive cool-climate Syrah with lifted notes of violets, fresh boysenberries, sandalwood and a hint of dried, peppered meat. The palate has a dense core of dark fruits beautifully integrated by acidity and fine, dusty tannins giving the wine a long, elegant feel towards the dry finish. Wines of Hawke's Bay

The oldest wine producing region in New Zealand, Hawkes bay is located on the east coast of the North Island.

Hawkes bay is split into a few subregions, the most notable of these are Gimblett Gravels, Bridge Pa Triangle and Te Mata Special Character Zone. These subregions are known for producing some of the best reds in the country, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The top blends from these regions are on par with top level Bordeaux blends from around the world.

White wine is also produced in Hawke’s Bay, with Chardonnay in the lead in terms of volume with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Viogner following behind.
