Arneis, often referred to as the "white Barolo," has a rich history rooted in the rolling hills of Italy's Piedmont region. This grape variety, once nearly extinct, has experienced a resurgence in recent years due to the dedication of passionate winemakers. Arneis boasts a light to medium body and is cherished for its aromatic profile, which typically showcases hints of pear, apricot, and white flowers. Its vibrant acidity makes it a versatile wine that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with a variety of dishes. The name Arneis translates to "little rascal" in the local dialect, aptly named for its historically challenging cultivation. Today, the challenges of its growth only serve to enhance its allure, making it a sought-after varietal for those in the know. With each sip, one can truly appreciate the intricate balance of flavors and the deep heritage that defines Arneis.
Italy is home to hundreds of wine grapes, all special in their own way. Some grapes are widely known, while others are local specialties. Regarding white grapes, Arneis might not be one of the most popular, but it’s undoubtedly one of the most dependable in terms of quality and price. Arneis is a white grape native to Piedmont in Northern Italy. The white varietal went nearly extinct in the 1960s, but it experienced a renaissance in the last decades of the 20th century. This is what you need to know about Arneis.
Today, over 95% of the vineyards dedicated to Arneis are in Piedmont, mainly in the Roero hills. Roero is a DOCG in Piedmont dedicated to the white wines made with Arneis and red grapes made with the powerful Nebbiolo. Arneis is not easy to grow. It has low yields and is prone to fungal disease. This hasn’t stopped traditional producers in the area from growing the noble white grape, often with spectacular results. Producers label the most popular Arneis wines as Roero Arneis DOCG, although others of similar quality are labelled as Langhe Arneis.
Arneis produces dry white wines with white fruit, citrus and floral scents. The grape can produce wine at diverse quality levels; the rare and less interesting IGT wines are amongst the most inexpensive. Then you have wines at DOC and DOCG levels, which are more complex on the nose. Although all Arneis wines are similarly made, they can look, smell and taste different depending on the winemaker’s philosophy. If sourced from the best sites, Arneis can produce age-worthy white wines that can evolve after a few years in a cellar while others are best enjoyed young. Arneis is anything but simple.
Arneis wines are not expensive; even those at the DOCG level are well priced for their quality. The finest wines, often those from reputable Piedmontese producers, can be pricier than those produced in a cooperative, but the quality is also significantly different. Arneis can become a suitable everyday white wine that will rise to any occasion. This is a fine wine and amongst the best in Italy for the category. Arneis is more expensive than ordinary white wine, but this is still a Piedmontese wine made by some of the most acclaimed winemakers in Italy; that’s worth the wine’s price alone.
The Best Arneis wines come from some of Piedmont’s most acclaimed cellars, including Vietti, Bruno Giacosa, Prunotto and Marcarinni — all producers that also make Barolo. And although these wines are excellent alternatives, smaller winemakers in the area also produce extraordinary wines with Arneis. Arneis is a lovely alternative for light and medium-bodied wines such as those made with Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin and Semillon. And although the wines are similar in acidity and aromatic complexity, no wine tastes like Arneis.
