The vineyards are situated at the base of the Alps (which separate it from Austria) and the soils are a mix clay and gravel from alluvial deposits. The key to this region is the difference in diurnal temperature. In the growing season the days are very warm but the nights freezing. This allows a nice, long ripening and wonderful aromatics for the white wines. The Pinot Grigio here can be a lot richer than from the Veneto and Trento. Justin insists on handpicked fruit and in terms of winemaking, further emphasizes the grapes' pulpy richness by allowing 12- 18 hour skin contact in the press. The result is wonderfully pure, textural Grigio with heightened aromatic profile. Made using the Charmat method (also known as 'cuvee close' or more straightforwardly, 'tank method'), this has fresh, floral aromas, a creamy mouth feel and notes of pear skin, nectarine and citrus. The finish is crunchy and dry. Add to that a dose of joie de vivre and a level of precision we have not seen in this wine before and, Roberto is your uncle.
