The Wine Front – Strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate, brown spices and mint. It’s bright and frisky, a pleasing pumice stone texture, a cranberry crunch gives freshness, and the finish offers good length. Lots of energy and good to drink. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front Nov 2023

James Halliday – Fruit from 45-year-old vines on the Paulownia and Balnaves Old Shiraz blocks; matured in large format French oak (48% new) for nine months. Elevated pepper spice and floral notes make for an attractive introduction. Ripe, red berried fruit flavours rush straight up in support, though a tension to both the acidity and tannin makes all this exuberance feel controlled. This is a medium-bodied wine that’s been turned out impeccably – it will drink well both young and with some years on it. Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion Aug 2023

Coonawarra, often referred to as the 'Red Wine Centre of Australia', is a slender strip of land known for its distinct geology and cool maritime climate. This unique combination makes it one of the country's finest regions for producing wines, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. The ancient terra rossa soil, a reddish-brown loam layered over limestone, imparts a unique character to the grapes grown here, contributing to the depth and complexity of the wines. Historically, the region was submerged under the sea, and the remnants of marine fossils today are a testament to its bygone era. The influence of the nearby ocean ensures a relatively stable climate, with mild summers and cool winters, perfect for the slow ripening of grapes. This results in wines that are beautifully structured, aromatic, and expressive of the region's unique terroir.
Coonawarra is a premium wine-producing region located in the Limestone Coast zone of South Australia, approximately 370 kilometers southeast of Adelaide. The region is particularly known for its iconic red "Terra Rossa" soil, a narrow strip of earth that has become synonymous with Coonawarra's viticultural identity. This rich, red topsoil layered over limestone provides optimal conditions for grapevine roots to penetrate deep into the ground, ensuring access to vital nutrients and moisture. Coonawarra's relatively cool maritime climate, with wet winters and dry summers, further enhances its suitability for viticulture, especially for specific grape varietals.
Wines from Coonawarra are revered globally for their distinctive characteristics and consistent high quality. Particularly renowned for its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, the region has gained a reputation for producing red wines with intense flavors, elegant structures, and aging potential. While Coonawarra hosts some of Australia's most premium wine labels that can command higher prices, it also offers a variety of wines across different price points, ensuring that both connoisseurs and everyday wine lovers can enjoy its offerings. Many find that the quality-to-price ratio in Coonawarra provides excellent value, offering wines with depth and character at accessible prices.
Coonawarra's distinction in the wine world can be attributed to its unique combination of soil, climate, and history. The Terra Rossa soil, a vibrant red hue due to its high iron content, is the region's crown jewel. This soil, combined with the underlying limestone, offers excellent drainage and imparts a unique mineral character to the wines. Coonawarra's maritime climate ensures that grapes mature slowly, developing a depth of flavor while retaining freshness and acidity. Additionally, the region's storied history, with vineyards dating back to the late 19th century, showcases its long-standing dedication to viticultural excellence.
Coonawarra is best known for its exemplary Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are celebrated for their intense blackcurrant and minty flavors, firm tannic structure, and impressive aging potential. The unique terroir of the region imparts a characteristic eucalyptus or mint note to many of its Cabernet Sauvignons, making them easily recognizable to discerning palates. While Cabernet is the star, Coonawarra also produces exceptional Shiraz, Merlot, and Chardonnay, all benefiting from the region's distinct soil and climatic conditions.
While preferences vary among wine enthusiasts, some wines consistently stand out and are recognized as benchmarks for Coonawarra. Many of Coonawarra's Cabernet Sauvignons are highly acclaimed, with several wineries consistently producing award-winning bottles. Noteworthy producers include Wynns Coonawarra Estate, whose "John Riddoch" Cabernet Sauvignon is often hailed as one of Australia's finest. Penley Estate, Balnaves of Coonawarra, and Bowen Estate are also among the region's standout wineries, frequently receiving praise for their consistent quality and expression of Coonawarra's unique terroir.
