Huon Hooke – "95 out of 100 we scored it, a gold Ribbon score, and number 1 out of 25 grenache blends from Barossa in 2019 so very high recommendation. $30 wine... ...Lovely full bodied wine, intense but not heavy, enough tannin to carry flavour and to make it stand up with food. Plummy, spicy, good balance, harmony, freshness, beautiful drinkability although will age well as well. We suggest drinking now until 10 years hence, but it would last a lot longer."

About This Wine

Medium-red and bright; Grenache's lustre well on show. Grenache on show aromatically; very grown-up Grenache thanks to the shiraz and Mataro components which bring a more rustic and savoury perfume. Plums, earth, rose petals crushed in the hand - heightened. Wafts of red jube lollies, soy, bay leaves...both ends of the aromatic spectrum are here - from fresh flowers to port. There is tension immediately, a clean and long red wine, rounded and rolling tannins taking over the mid to back palate. This is NOT a lumpish red wine: there is generosity and oomph but no heavy-handedness. The complexity of aroma with the dipping and diving fruit flavour of red berry compote, green herbs, spice, pepper and fine shavings of dark chocolate make for a playful seriousness.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
