James Halliday – From two blocks on the Avon Brae vineyard in the Eden Valley and a single vineyard in the Barossa Valley, open-fermented, matured in French barriques (15% new) for almost 2 years before blending. The Reynell clone has for many, many years been regarded as awesome when used with French oak, this one of innumerable examples. the wine is very complex, with a suite of flavours inching to the spice/licorice of cool grown shiraz. A snap at the price.

James Halliday – Matured for almost 2 years in French hogsheads (40% new). An impressive follow-on from the '15, with an unusual lacquered palate of a panoply of black fruits and spices. It flows evenly and without hurry along toasty oak without a breath of alcohol heat, the cedary aromas and flavours of the French oak slotting into the finish and aftertaste. This wine has had balance from the word go, its long term future gold-plated.

James Halliday – Has the same felicitous oak handling as its Shiraz sibling, even staring down the challenge of cabernet sauvignon. Mind you, it is a powerful cabernet, with a depth and range of cassis/blackcurrant/mulberry flavours tied to its bedrock of tannin, and does need patience.

Nestled in the Barossa Range of South Australia, Eden Valley is more than just a wine-producing region; it's a testament to nature's beauty and bounty. With an altitude higher than many other wine-growing regions, its cooler climate gives birth to grapes that mature slowly, allowing them to develop rich flavors and unique aromatics. This, combined with its ancient, mineral-rich soils, ensures that wines from the valley possess a distinctive character that sets them apart. Rieslings from this area are particularly noteworthy, expressing vibrant citrus notes and a crisp acidity. Shiraz, too, bears a signature style, being more restrained and elegant than its counterparts from warmer climates. As you delve deeper into wines from this region, you'll uncover layers of complexity, each telling a tale of the land from which it comes.
Eden Valley is an enchanting wine region located in South Australia, lying to the east of the Barossa Range. This elevated region, characterized by its rugged landscapes and ancient soils, provides a cooler climate compared to its low-lying neighbor, the Barossa Valley. Rich in winemaking history, Eden Valley spans a diverse range of terrains, from rolling hills to verdant valleys, all blessed with a unique terroir that has made it a beacon for viticulture. Just a short drive from Adelaide, it's not just a hub for premium wines but also offers a scenic escape for those looking to immerse themselves in Australia's vinicultural charm.
Eden Valley is renowned for producing wines of exceptional quality, drawing wine enthusiasts and critics alike. The region's higher altitude and cooler climate allow for a longer ripening period, giving rise to wines with deep flavors, refined elegance, and impressive structure. While Eden Valley has its share of premium wines that fetch higher prices, especially those from old vines or single-vineyard designations, it also boasts a wide array of more accessibly priced wines that do not skimp on quality. This balance ensures that both connoisseurs and casual drinkers can enjoy the region's offerings without stretching their budget.
The distinctiveness of Eden Valley lies in its unique amalgamation of altitude, climate, and ancient soils. The region's elevation, ranging between 400 and 600 meters, offers a cooler climate than surrounding areas, leading to wines with vibrant acidity and intricate aromatics. The valley's ancient rocky soils, particularly its patches of decomposed granite and sandy loam, play a pivotal role in crafting wines with a pronounced mineral edge. Furthermore, Eden Valley's deep-rooted winemaking heritage, combined with the passion and innovation of its contemporary winemakers, solidifies its position as a region that marries tradition with forward-thinking practices.
Eden Valley is most celebrated for its Rieslings. These wines, emblematic of the region, are often characterized by their intense aromatics, notes of lime, green apple, and flinty minerality, and their ability to age gracefully. The high-acid, dry Rieslings from Eden Valley are frequently considered among the finest in Australia, showcasing an impeccable balance of fruit and minerality. However, the region is not limited to white wines. Eden Valley also produces remarkable Shiraz, known for its elegance, peppery notes, and red berry flavors, offering a cooler-climate counterpoint to the richer styles from the neighboring Barossa Valley.
While "best" can be subjective depending on individual palates, several wines from Eden Valley consistently garner acclaim. In the realm of Rieslings, producers like Henschke, Pewsey Vale, and Mountadam are frequently celebrated for their refined, age-worthy wines. When it comes to Shiraz, labels such as Yalumba, Eden Hall, and Spinifex produce expressions that beautifully capture the region's cool-climate character. Whether you're seeking a crisp, invigorating white or a nuanced, aromatic red, Eden Valley's diverse portfolio ensures a memorable tasting experience.
