Wine Spectator – A tightly knit Champagne, backed by racy acidity, this is fresh and harmonious, with a finely detailed mousse and a delicate range of black raspberry, pickled ginger and chalk flavors, offering a touch of salted almond that echoes on the finish. Drink now through 2024.

we91

Wine Enthusiast – This is one of my favorite nonvintage Champagnes, rich and fresh at the same time, with a serious character that reminds you that great Champagne is a wine as well as bubbles. Complex, weighty and delicious, this is a Champagne that should be enjoyed with food.

de94

Decanter – The nose opens with the fresh ripeness of yellow apple and highlights of Granny Smith. It has beautifully subtle autolysis on the palate, deepening into notes of creamy apple crumble, Golden Delicious and Mirabelle plum, while remaining utterly strait-laced. Elegance, length and absolute freshness are inherent and quietly convincing.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Aromas of crips orchard fruit, pear and apricot, mingled with hints of fresh bread and pastry, introduce the latest release of Gosset's NV Brut Grande Réserve, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy but incisive wine that's deceptively generous but also structured to reward some bottle age.

Wine Spectator – This vibrant rosé is tightly knit and racy, with a floral overtone and flavors of peach skin, white cherry, whole-grain toast and chalky mineral showing finely honed precision as they ride the creamy, detailed mousse. Disgorged May 2018. Drink now through 2024.

we93

Wine Enthusiast – Heading towards dryness, this pale-colored rosé Champagne is also rich. Its red-currant and crisp apple flavors are laced with citrus zest to give a wine that has fine balance.

js92

James Suckling – A bright nose of strawberry and pink-grapefruit aromas with hints of blood oranges and berries, as well as almond biscuits. The palate has a super vibrant, fleshy ball of fresh red-fruit flavor and delivers a refreshing, minerally finish. Drink now.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Bottled in 2014 and disgorged in June 2018, the NV Grand Rosé Brut offers up an attractive bouquet of sweet red apples, fresh pastry and orange rind. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, concentrated and powerful, built around a bright spine of acidity and a tight-knit core but with enough substance to cover its structural bones and offer great promise for medium-term cellaring. This is an intense, elegantly austere wine that exemplifies the Gosset style.

Wine Enthusiast – A blend mainly of Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims, Gosset's deluxe cuvée has been well aged. With its edge of toastiness and the still-vibrant citrus and white fruits, the wine is at a beautiful, poised moment, though it will continue to age even further.

js96

James Suckling – This stylish, complex and elegantly powerful Champagne is the pinnacle of Gosset’s range and delivers such layered, fresh and complex style. The palate has a super smooth-honed, long and plush feel with a wealth of grilled almonds and grapefruit. Long, succulent draw through the finish. Magnificent.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2007 Celebris Extra Brut is the latest rendition of this cuvée, which cellar master Odilon de Varine describes as "not a vintage Gosset but a Gosset vintage"—meaning that it's produced only in years adapted to the house's powerful but austere style. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of lemon oil, marzipan, warm biscuits and wet stones, it's full-bodied, with a deep and concentrated core of ripe but racy fruit, a tangy spine of acidity and an elegant pinpoint mouse, displaying terrific purity and precision.

Wine Spectator – Crisp and minerally up front, this is finely meshed and mouthwatering, lightly chalky in texture and offering flavors of ripe black currant, lemon pith and pastry dough. Floral and spice notes play on the lasting finish. Drink now through 2029.

we93

Wine Enthusiast – A blend of two-thirds Chardonnay with one-third Pinot Noir, this beautifully balanced wine is poised between richness and intense crispness. Its apple and ripe pear fruits are now softening and beginning to meld into the taut texture. Still a little young, this wine will repay aging. Wait to drink it until 2022.

js93

James Suckling – This offers spiced berry-biscuit aromas and a toasted hazelnut and brioche edge. Berry pastry, too. The palate has a suave, sleek and smooth texture. Finely honed and finishes dry. Flavor and focus here. V92Vinous

rp94

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Since Gosset makes a point of commercializing wines only when they deem them ready, the 2012 Grand Millésime Brut will be released at the end of this year, while the 2010 and 2008 continue to wait in the wings. The wine is still quite tightly wound after its recent disgorgement, unfurling in the glass with a youthful bouquet of warm biscuits, apple, lemon and peach that picks up a more pronounced smoky top note as the wine sits in the glass. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and powerful, with a deep and concentrated core, incisive acids and a precise, saline finish. This is a muscular vintage of the Grand Millésime that seems likely to evolve slowly.

Wine Spectator – A harmonious Champagne, with a satiny mousse, this shows good length and focus to the rich notes of baked plum and apricot fruit, biscuit, smoke and lemon curd. A firm frame of well-cut acidity lends balance. (AN)

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Exclusively made from Pinot Noir cultivated in Ambonnay, Aÿ, Verzy, Chigny-les-Roses and Tauxières, the intensely white-golden colored NV Grand Blanc de Noirs Extra-Brut is deep, intense and rich on the toasty and vinous nose. Full-bodied, round and pure, this is a generous, highly elegant, precise, finessed, fresh and stimulatingly salty cuvée with structure, grip and persistent vinous character. It has very nice reduction and piercing minerality. (SR)

Wine Enthusiast – Aged for at least 12 years after bottling, this Champagne is richly textured, showing mature fruitiness, touches of aging from the brioche flavors and an elegant, ripe aftertaste.

de94

Decanter – The deep golden colour promises the richness that nose and palate duly deliver. The first sniff reveals rounded generosity reminiscent of shortbread, further swirling brings yellow apple with overtones of ripe apricot. That apple and apricot combo settles into a mid-palate mellowness, edged and enlivened by smooth bubbles that frame all this richness with their welcome freshness. Indeed, the wine works as an indulgent aperitif but comes into its own with food.

rp93

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – Based on the 2006 vintage and disgorged in December 2019, the inaugural release of Gosset's new NV Brut 12 Ans de Cave a Minima wafts from the glass with a lovely bouquet of candied peel, warm biscuits, yellow orchard fruit and brioche. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's bright and incisive, with beautifully integrated acids, a delicate pinpoint mousse and a long, sapid finish. Gosset's racy style has really synergized with the ripe vintage and long sur lattes maturation to make for a very successful cuvée

French wines, with their rich heritage, have always stood as a testament to the country's deep-rooted winemaking traditions. Traversing through the lush valleys of Loire to the terraced hills of Côtes du Rhône, France offers a tapestry of diverse wine regions, each with its unique character and charm. The terroir, a French term which describes the specific environmental factors affecting the taste and flavor of the wine produced, is an integral part of the French wine narrative. Bordeaux, for instance, with its maritime climate, produces wines that have an unparalleled depth and complexity. In contrast, the sun-kissed vineyards of Languedoc-Roussillon yield wines that are fruitier and vibrant. The meticulous art of winemaking in France is passed down through generations, preserving age-old techniques while embracing innovations. This delicate balance between tradition and modernity ensures that each bottle reflects the passion, dedication, and artistry of its makers. In essence, French wines are more than just a beverage; they are a journey through history, culture, and craftsmanship.
French wines stand as an epitome of elegance, craftsmanship, and tradition. What makes French wines so special is the country's unique combination of soil, climate, and winemaking heritage – often referred to as "terroir." This term encompasses everything from the minerals in the vineyard soils to the way the grapes are tended and the wine is made. France's diverse regions, from the frosty climes of Champagne to the sun-soaked terraces of Provence, lend themselves to an array of wine styles, each carrying a distinct hallmark of its origin. Moreover, centuries of winemaking expertise, passed down through generations, have sculpted France's reputation on the world wine stage. Thus, when one sips a French wine, they're not just tasting the grape; they're imbibing history, tradition, and the very essence of the French countryside.
When discussing popular French wines, names like Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne often top the list. Bordeaux, known for its powerful reds, is home to iconic blends featuring Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Burgundy, on the other hand, is celebrated for its Pinot Noir reds and Chardonnay whites, wines that have become benchmarks for these grape varieties globally. Champagne, the sparkling wine mecca, is revered for its effervescent offerings that have graced many a celebration. Beyond these, regions like the Rhône Valley, Alsace, and Loire Valley also offer wines that have garnered acclaim and large fan followings. Each region's unique terroir and traditions shape its wines' distinctive character.
For those delving into French wines, a logical starting point would be the classics. Begin with a crisp and elegant Chardonnay from Burgundy, then move to a robust Bordeaux blend to experience the depth and complexity of French reds. A bottle from Champagne will introduce you to the pinnacle of sparkling wines, with its delicate bubbles and complex flavors. From the Loire Valley, a sip of Sauvignon Blanc, often brimming with zesty citrus notes, is a must. And for a unique experience, a bottle from Beaujolais showcases the versatility of the Gamay grape, offering wines that range from light and fruity to deep and structured.
Defining the "best" French wines is subjective, given the vast diversity and individual preferences. However, certain wines have achieved legendary status due to their quality, heritage, and impact on the wine world. Wines from the Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy, such as those from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, are often placed on a pedestal. Similarly, Bordeaux's First Growth estates, including Château Margaux and Château Latour, have set standards for red wine excellence. In the realm of bubbles, Dom Pérignon and Krug are among Champagne's shining stars. These wines, while representing the pinnacle of French winemaking, are just the tip of the iceberg. Each region, with its hidden gems and artisanal producers, brings to the table wines that can captivate the palate and soul in equal measure.
