World Wine – The 2013 Beaujolais Villages 'Prestige' comes from 100-year-old vines. It possesses more intensity on the nose than the Elégance with a light touch of liquorice joining the red and black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit, sappier than the Elégance with fine poise on the finish that just cuts away a little quickly. Otherwise, this is another fine Beaujolais Villages from winemaker Laurent Savoye. 90 Points – Neil Martin, eroberparker.com

The Wine Front – “From pink granite, 45-year-old vines, whole bunch. Rose perfume and orange blossom in the opening act. Is it a cliché that Fleurie smells floral? Don’t even get me started on ‘feminine’. But it does. And there’s also a pink grapefruit twist lingering high, acidity is something of a highlight here, following that grapefruit theme, the whole palate is lifted and ethereal. Granitic dust of tannins on a bitter wave, meaty finish with a lingering cherry. Very good.” - Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front

Gamay has etched its identity in the wine world as a grape variety synonymous with vibrant youthfulness and energy. Found primarily in Beaujolais, this varietal thrives in the granitic soils, benefiting from the region's temperate climate. The end result is wines that burst with flavors of cherries, raspberries, and sometimes even hints of banana or bubblegum. The history of Gamay is filled with ups and downs, but its resilience and undeniable charm have cemented its place in the world of wine. The tradition of Beaujolais Nouveau, celebrated on the third Thursday of November, has propelled Gamay into the spotlight. It's a testament to the grape's ability to produce wines that are best enjoyed young, capturing the essence of the harvest. Not restricted to just Beaujolais, Gamay has found homes in other regions like the Loire Valley, where it further displays its versatility. Light, refreshing, and often with a slight chill, Gamay wines are the perfect companion for gatherings, picnics, or simply a quiet evening. Its inherent charm and vibrancy make it a varietal that invites exploration and enjoyment.
Gamay is a grape variety that produces red wines known for their vibrant fruitiness, refreshing acidity, and relatively low tannins. Gamay wines typically showcase flavors and aromas of red cherries, raspberries, and sometimes hints of violet and earthy undertones. They're often characterized by their juicy and exuberant profiles, making them some of the most approachable and versatile red wines on the market. Originating from the Beaujolais region in France, Gamay has found its identity and pinnacle of expression here, though it's also cultivated in various other wine regions globally.
Beaujolais, located in the southern part of Burgundy, France, is the birthplace and most renowned region for Gamay wine. Within Beaujolais, there are ten specific crus, or designated areas, that produce particularly outstanding expressions of Gamay. These include Morgon, Fleurie, and Moulin-à-Vent, each imparting its unique terroir-driven characteristics onto the wine. Outside of Beaujolais, regions like the Loire Valley in France and pockets in Switzerland, Canada, and Oregon in the U.S. have also seen success with this varietal, producing their distinct versions of Gamay.
Beaujolais Nouveau is perhaps the most famous style of Gamay, released on the third Thursday of November every year and celebrated for its fresh and fruity profile. However, for those delving deeper into the intricacies of Gamay, the wines from the ten crus of Beaujolais often come highly recommended. Morgon is known for its robust and earthy Gamay, Fleurie for its elegance and floral nuances, and Moulin-à-Vent for its structure and aging potential. These wines, among others from the region, capture the essence of Gamay at its finest.
While the crus of Beaujolais can offer some of the most exceptional expressions of Gamay, the broader Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages appellations often present fantastic value for money. These wines retain the characteristic juicy fruitiness of Gamay while being priced more accessibly. They're ideal for those seeking the pleasure of Gamay without a significant investment, making them popular choices for everyday enjoyment.
Thanks to its vibrant acidity and fruity profile, Gamay is incredibly food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with a wide range of dishes, from charcuterie and light salads to roasted poultry and grilled meats. Its affinity for earthy flavors means it complements mushroom dishes remarkably well. Gamay's refreshing quality also makes it an excellent match for spicy foods, including many Asian cuisines. Whether you're dining on a simple roast chicken, spicy stir-fry, or even sushi, Gamay can be the versatile wine companion you've been seeking.
