James Suckling – At first very leathery and animal in the nose, then the smoke wafts in and is followed by candied-orange, tobacco-leaf and coffee notes. Very concentrated, but focused and elegant for this appellation. Invigorating freshness at the long, stony finish. So dynamic! From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

Hermitage, nestled in the heart of the Rhône Valley, is often hailed as the crown jewel of French vineyards. Its storied past stretches back centuries, with tales of its wines being celebrated by royalty and revered by wine connoisseurs of old. The unique terroir of Hermitage, characterized by a blend of granite, chalk, and clay soils, imbues the wines with a distinct minerality and depth. Primarily known for its powerful and aromatic red wines, the region also produces a smaller quantity of exceptional whites. The vine-covered slopes, bathed in ample sunlight and tempered by the cool Rhône breezes, ensure that the grapes achieve optimal ripeness, resulting in wines that resonate with both complexity and harmony. Each bottle of Hermitage wine carries with it a legacy of the land, the dedication of the vine-growers, and a tradition of excellence that remains unsurpassed.
Hermitage is a prestigious wine-growing region situated in the northern part of the Rhône Valley in southern France. Its distinguished position on the west bank of the Rhône River is characterized by a hill that rises steeply behind the town of Tain-l'Hermitage. This hill, often referenced in wine literature, serves as a natural amphitheater, catching and maximizing the sun's beneficial rays, which in turn aids in the optimal ripening of grapes. Historically, legends suggested that the hill was once a hermit's dwelling, giving the region its evocative name. Today, the Hermitage appellation, although relatively small in size, holds an outsized reputation in the world of wine, standing as a beacon of quality in the Rhône Valley.
Wines from Hermitage are renowned for their exceptional quality, complexity, and aging potential. Crafted predominantly from Syrah for reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for whites, these wines express the rich terroir of the region with elegance and intensity. While the unparalleled quality of Hermitage wines often commands premium prices, especially for well-aged bottles from esteemed vintages, there are also many options available for enthusiasts seeking more affordable expressions without compromising on quality. Exploring younger vintages or lesser-known producers within Hermitage can lead to discovering wines that offer an excellent balance of quality and value.
Hermitage is most celebrated for its red wines made primarily from the Syrah grape. These wines are lauded for their deep color, powerful aroma profiles featuring dark fruits, spices, leather, and sometimes even olive tapenade. With age, they evolve, revealing more nuanced and complex tertiary aromas like truffle, game, and smoke. The terroir, characterized by granite-based soils, imparts a unique minerality to the wines, enhancing their structure and longevity. While the reds are the stars, Hermitage also produces white wines, predominantly from Marsanne and Roussanne, which are aromatic, full-bodied, and known for their notes of almond, honey, and pear.
Hermitage boasts a range of top-tier wines, often distinguished by their age-worthiness and intricate flavor profiles. Some iconic producers to consider include Jean-Louis Chave, Paul Jaboulet Aîné (especially their renowned "La Chapelle" label), and Marc Sorrel. These producers, among others, craft wines that consistently receive acclaim from critics and enthusiasts alike. Vintages play a crucial role in the quality of wines from Hermitage, with years like 1990, 2001, 2009, and 2010 being particularly celebrated for their optimal growing conditions and resulting wine quality. When seeking the best from Hermitage, it's wise to research specific vintages, producers, and tasting notes to make an informed choice.
