The Wine Front – "...a huge volume of flavour, all black olive tapenade and sage and sweet dark fruit on a finish of excellent length. It's a bold wine, and kind of overt as a youngster, but should turn out well with considerable bottle age." 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front It has might and power but it’s not over the top; fruit-wise it’s ‘only’ medium in weight and, indeed, it boasts both an elegance and a fruit freshness. But my oh my, what a swagger of tannin, what an infusion of fragrant shrubbery, what commanding length. Oak, smoky and cedar-like, plays a key role but safe to say, the wine is up to it and then some. Roll me in a river of this. Smoked tobacco. Old dry bay leaves. Fresh redcurrant, into black. This is a cabernet. 96+ Points' - Campbell Mattinson, Winefront

The Wine Front – 'It's the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (56%) and shiraz (44%) that could take on all-comers.Stand aside. There's a freight train of flavour here and while its brakes are hydraulic its momentum is enormous. For the love of grapes. A huge swerve and plum and blackcurrant flavour comes drenched in cedar wood, mocha and vanilla, though its top notes of tobacco and bay shine throughout like the top edge of wave. Will you take a look at the nut-like tannin on this job. This has more texture than a biscuit, more common than a keyboard. It's sheer old-new-school Aussie red wine brilliance. Huon Hooke – Very deep, dark, youthful purple/red colour with a rich, complex, profound bouquet that has a substantial oak input but not overdone—given the concentration of flavour. The palate flavour persists a very long time. It’s firm and youthful, needs more time, and promises much for the future. Dark berries galore: rich and ripe and very, very attractive. James Halliday – The first vintage made by Yangarra from the Hickinbotham Vineyard after its far larger parent company, Jackson Family Estate, purchased it in 2011. Deeply coloured and unashamedly full-bodied, it has layer-upon-layer of black fruits, tannins and the French oak in which it was matured for 18 months; significantly, the decision was to not fine the tannins. James Halliday – Matured for 15 months in Bordeaux oak. The epitome of top quality McLaren Vale cabernet in it inimitable style, generous yet firmly structured, cassic, choc-mint, ripe tannins and integrated oak of high quality. - 95 points, James Halliday, Wine Companion 2017
Huon Hooke – Deep red/purple colour and a bright, fresh, primary fruit aroma of blueberry, raspberry, cassis and violets. Oak is very much in the background and it's very varietal. Medium to full-bodied, not a whopper and not very tannic. Oak is subtle as is the grip, and the fruit is very much in the spotlight. It's a more elegant iteration of this wine and remarkably approachable for its age. A beautiful wine. Drink 2016 - 2034. - 96 points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

Huon Hooke – Deep rich colour and a rich, concentrated bouquet led by smoky char-oak and the palate is likewise quite oak-driven, with medium to full-body and slightly gritty texture. Sweet raspberry fruit core. It could reward a little time in the cellar. It's a bit young at this juncture. The Real Review, 23 March, 2021

James Halliday – From a single block of bush vines planted in '62, destemmed but whole berries, 10% whole bunch, open fermented, 13 days on skins, aged in seasoned barrels for 7 months. Heady aromas of raspberries, star anise and a dash of Mediterranean herbs. Lovely balance and a succulence on the medium-bodied palate where ripe, sandy tannins kick in. Pitch-perfect now. 95 POINTS JANE FAULKNER - HALLIDAY'S WINE COMPANION
or $74.78 in any mix of 12 bottles.
James Halliday – A blend of three distinctive blocks on loams, silt and clay. No whole bunch. Gently extracted by wetting the cap and racking/returning. Circa 20 days on skins. 6 months in puncheons. 6 more in foudres and a concrete egg. A corpulent wine, lush and full. Yet there is nothing jammy about it. Eclipsed by its Bordeaux varietal siblings perhaps, but as far as warm-climate shiraz goes, this is at the apex of the qualitative totem pole. Blue fruits, violet, anise, clove and pepper grind. Some salumi, too. But the tannins are this gorgeous wine’s opus. - Ned Goodwin MW, James Halliday Wine Companion 2022, 13 August, 2021, 95 Points
