With less than four acres of Chardonnay vines, production is highly limited. That year, David Hirsch prepared 2.5 acres for planting on a rocky, 40% slope above his house. He was enamored with Barolo and originally intended to plant Nebbiolo. Burt Williams of Williams Selyem told David he was crazy and should plant Chardonnay instead. Thus the old Chardonnay vineyard was born. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn 2002 David planted an additional 1.4 acres of Chardonnay on a sandstone slope in field 12, just over the hill from the original block. Together these two tiny vineyards comprise our estate Chardonnay, first produced under the Hirsch label in 2006. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWinemaking \n\u003cbr\u003eThe 2024 Chardonnay was direct pressed and transferred to French and Eastern European oak barrels, 25% new, for fermentation and élevage. No yeast was added at any point. Primary and malolactic fermentations occurred in barrel. No lees stirring was employed. The wine was racked clean to stainless steel for one month before bottling. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTasting Notes \n\u003cbr\u003eThe 2024 Hirsch Chardonnay has a captivating and seductive aromatic profile that balances richness with restraint. Notes of lemon curd, honeysuckle, pastry cream and a faint saline note that evokes the Pacific Ocean. The palate is medium-bodied with an energetic texture. These vineyards enjoy the cooling effect of the Pacific, but are protected from the full onslaught of wind and fog. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe foundation of the West Ridge Pinot Noir is Block 7, planted in 1992 with cuttings David Hirsch took from Mount Eden Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It is a true massale selection, with a diverse genetic makeup. The lineage of these plants can be traced back to Paul Masson, who brought Pinot Noir cuttings from Burgundy to California in the late 1800s. The genetic diversity of the plants imparts greater complexity to the wine but also perpetuates the leaf-roll virus that came with the vines from Burgundy. This virus inhibits the ability of the vines to carry out photosynthesis and produce sugar. The result is wines that are more delicate, naturally lower in alcohol, and have extremely fine tannins. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eTasting Notes \n\u003cbr\u003eThe 2023 West Ridge is a delicate, almost fragile Pinot Noir, with an intense mineral character and pure red fruit.
