Full biodynamics as always, Gin Gin clone from plantings made between 1976 and 1988, largely new oak, we are seeing this wine released in the new lightweight bottles. Environmentally positive, though it does seem to rob the wine of some of its gravitas. Fortunately, it is what is in the bottle that counts. A straw\/lemon hue, this is a very youthful Chardonnay, but it is elegance personified, with energy and focus and the signs of very early complexity. There is a beautifully creamy texture here with fine, citrussy acidity. The nose offers notes of peaches, florals, ginger, hints of nectarine, bergamot and lemon curd. This is poised and taut, a wine of precision. Long and lingering, there are notes of oatmeal on the palate. Leave it for a couple of years and it will be very special. His daughter Vanya – a finalist for Vigneron of the Year, and her team has crafted another wine that celebrates clarity and purity of the fruit and delivers a delightfully seamless drinking experience. From a hot, dry vintage there is plenty of concentration and length but also elegance. A hint of flint, citrus and melon nuances, astutely judged oak. Just delightful and worth 97 points.’\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e2024 vintage was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record. Rainfall turned off like a tap at the end of September 2023, with nominally no rain until the season broke in May 2024. Unseasonable warmth all through the growing season combined with heatwaves in January meant harvest started early and was over extremely quickly. But with sunshine comes flavour and 2024 does not disappoint in fruit weight and concentration. No rain and plenty of sun means wines hit their optimal ripeness (albeit earlier than expected!) and created wines with great depth of flavour and extract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ample marri blossom and dry conditions meant both bird and disease pressures were low, the main thing keeping us awake at night was the water stress on our dry grown vines. Commanding yet precise, this Syrah is a compelling expression of Le Sol, capturing the raw power and structural authority of the Gimblett Gravels with remarkable focus.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLe Sol (French: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation, with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Intensively hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep dark Syrah with purple hues. Le Sol is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\"Right from the very beginning of the Craggy Range adventure, this wine has been my favourite of their range. I know others disagree and look to other options (plenty of late-night discussions have failed to resolve this, so I urge you to make up your own mind), but for me, this stands up, year after year after year. That said, I’m not sure if it has ever stood taller than in the wonderful 2024 vintage. This is a brilliant wine and if it is not on your bucket list then it should be. The name reflects the soil. The fruit comes from the stoniest areas of their Gimblett Gravels vineyard, which was planted to what they term a ‘heritage clone’, which came to New Zealand back in the 1840s. Maturation was for a year and a half in a mix of French and Austrian oak, 29% of which was new. An opaque yet vibrant purple\/maroon hue with a dark magenta edge. Beautifully refined, this is all class. Imagine if you could take what’s best about New World Shiraz and Old World Syrah and blend them into something even more special. The wine has exquisite balance and aromas of chocolate, mocha, leather, cloves, cassis, animal flesh, truffles, violets, licorice, bergamot and coffee beans. Well focused with great length, we see hints of bacon fat and cocoa powder emerging on the palate. Despite this cornucopia of flavours, the wine is at all times regally elegant and yet the intensity never wavers for a moment. Such length. Finishing with silky tannins, the seductive texture runs throughout, and the wine should drink magnificently over the next fifteen to twenty-five years. And yet here we have an absolutely brilliant Chardonnay, and there are others, which should surely take centre stage. The lesson? Never neglect the great Chardonnays from New Zealand. For me, I can’t recall a better LBC than this one. I’m not sure why it needs a French name, but that apparently means ‘beautiful pebbles’. 2024 is simply a brilliant vintage. The best parcels in the vineyard were selected and whole bunch pressed to stainless steel before racking to French oak for fermentation with wild yeasts. Maturation was for eleven months in oak on full lees. The wine was then racked into stainless steel for a further four months. The Gimblett Gravels sub-region in Hawkes Bay may be seen as a special red district, but it can also produce some glorious Chardonnays, and this wine surely sits alongside the better Premier Cru Chardonnays from Burgundy, and a few Grand Cru as well. The big difference between those wines and this one is that they are normally two or three times, at least, more expensive. A shimmering pale lemon\/gold, this is a Chardonnay of serious class.
