James Halliday – A selection of the best estate-grown chardonnay, with only 400 dozen made, winemaking much the same as its junior sibling. While retaining freshness and precision, the fruit here is more juicy and polished, not quite as angular.

James Halliday – Oak rears at first but it soon settles into fine drinking form. Stone fruit, custard apple and cream caramel characters burst confidently through the palate and on to the finish.

James Suckling – Stonier is a strong chardonnay house. Here, an example why. Scents of white peaches and nectarines are carried to impressive length by a touch of salty, oyster shell freshness. Cashew notes and generosity at the core. The harmony between extract and acidity is impressive. The feel is considerably brisker than the medium-bodied palate conveys, suggesting that this wine should age well across the mid-term.

Huon Hooke – Smoky, butter-shortbread and Weetbix aromas, the palate tense and dry/savoury, with subtle grip and the line and length are good. A little lean and tense, but attractive flavour, finished with lively lemony acidity that lingers on. This has potential to improve with more time.

James Halliday – A wine with unexpected grip, strongly arguing that it shouldn't be consumed for at least five years.

The Wine Front – “A Gris that brings lively aromas of Nashi pear, almonds, fresh bread dough, pomelo. There’s a crunch of green fruit but also a softness of yeasty layers with a pinch of salt and a warming spice dust at the end. It has a vegetal/herbal spectrum taking the edge of sweet nuances. It does it all very well, I really enjoy the savoury mouthfeel with a salty pastry touch. It’s a top game Gris and you gotta love it for the texture.” - Kasia Sobiesiak, The Wine Front

The Wine Front – “Zesty oily quality, citrus essential oils, apricot, a bit of fresh aromatic herbs, pastry with sweet cream and pickled ginger. That touch of something ‘pickled’ (by no means vinegar, maybe preserved is a better word), gives a nice savoury edge to the sweet perfume. Aromas are accentuated just enough, tamed from being extreme with a cleansing bitterness and zesty bite, pithy salty quality on the palate. Cinnamon, ginger, ruby grapefruit on the finish. It has textural bitterness and cinnamon spice, also baked pear, mandarine peel, yellow grapefruit. Waxy and pleasantly bitter with cumin seeds and fresh minty finish. James Halliday – “Fermented on skins for 12 days, aged 8 months in barrel. A savoury wine, even if there’s some stone fruit in the mix, yet mostly smoky and peppery with a whisper of lanolin.
