It was a splendid season, and the general feeling is that 2024 will be remembered alongside 2013, 2001 and 1998 as an outstanding year.

The aromatic profile is complex and distinctively “other” fruit. The wine transports you to a place where one experiences potentially unexplored territories of colour and feeling. The richness and decadence of the nose are unmistakable and laced with white flowers like daphne, clover and Christmas lilies. If the acidity in the Chardonnay 2024 is a river, here with the Pinot Gris it is a spring. The wine bubbles up to the surface, gushing out over the palate. There is acidity and plenty of tannins that rally to give order and structure. But the anarchy is stronger. There is not one direction in which this wine flows. It is dynamic; it pulls and draws with voluptuous weight and buoyancy.

Hand-harvested fruit was pressed the following day, cold. After a light settling, the juice was racked into large 600-litre oak barrels for a long and slow spontaneous ferment over 18 months. It was then transferred into a stainless-steel vessel before being bottled, unfined, in December 2025.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1421/5622/files/Worldwine_85_517e0902-9fa3-4d45-ab0f-532fcd47ad77.jpg?v=1789502826
oraterra-oraterra-chardonnay-2024
Oraterra Oraterra Chardonnay 2024

The 2024 season was a contrast to 2023, coming with a sting – or in this case, a grand finale – at the end. It was a remarkable vintage for ripening and acid retention; to be honest, from the moment we picked it, we had a good feeling about the potential of this Chardonnay. It was never going to disappoint. Fruit dominance is seen in kumquat, cut meadow flowers, buttercups and chalk. None, perhaps, is typical for Chardonnay, but so characteristic of ours. The wine moves steeply and swiftly over the palate like a river, with amazing textures and shapes. The acid is a solid levee, guiding the wine and giving it direction. However, its full-bodied nature wants to spill over the sides, filling the mouth from front to back and forward again like a wave, full of energy.

Hand-harvested fruit was pressed the following day, chilled. After a light settling, the juice was racked into foudres (1000 litres wooden casks) for a spontaneous ferment. Spring malolactic fermentation started naturally in October/November and finished in early 2025. The wine remained in these foudres, on lees, for 18 months. It was then transferred to tank and bottled without fining or filtration in December 2025.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1421/5622/files/Worldwine_84_cc48b4c9-6a9d-457b-8777-f00093b42eb2.jpg?v=1789502826
oraterra-oraterra-pinot-noir-2024
Oraterra Oraterra Pinot Noir 2024

Beautiful vintages like 2024 risk losing a certain hook, or friction, in the wine. It can make it too easy and welcoming: seeing the forest but no longer the trees.

By picking early, we avoided this risk and were able to retain good acidity and a degree of disposition to provide interest in the wine.

Dark and bright fruit are the antagonists, with Morello cherry cutting through the riper characters. This Pinot Noir goes beyond typical varietal qualities to offer an array of complex and inviting aromatics.

The wine is comfortable, rounded and softly cushioned, moving effortlessly over the palate. Once it is in the back, the wine returns and resurfaces towards the front of the mouth with fine powdery tannins, like the white wash in “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Japanese artist Hokusai.

The hook is a little like the area between the fruit and the skin of a watermelon, with the tannins acting as chaperones and guiding the fruit toward each corner of the mouth.
