James Suckling – Darker fruit on the nose with walnut, spice box, incense and espresso bean, too. Medium-bodied, firm and structured with polished tannins and a creamy, compact mid-palate. Quality dark oak spice throughout. Long and rich. Better from 2024.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – An icon wine of Tuscany, the Fèlsina 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia (with 48,000 bottles made) is distinguished by its special aromatic fingerprint that truly brings us to a sense of place. At its heart, the wine reveals dark fruit and plum. More interesting, however, are the dusty mineral sensations that give so much texture and depth to the Rancia. These aromas can only be found in Sangiovese from the galestro and alberese-rich soils of Chianti Classico. This vintage follows up with sweet tobacco, toasted chestnut and scorched earth. Give this wine more time to flesh out and evolve in the bottle.

James Suckling – The Fuligni 2018 Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its smooth integration of aromas and the carefully balanced intensity achieved here, which shows momentum but also remains very fine and nuanced. There are many sides to the bouquet with wild fruit, cassis, crushed stone, candied orange and fresh herbs or rosemary. A floral note also appears that suggests rose or iris root. The tannins are very well managed and silky. You hardly feel them, yet the wine offers firm structure throughout. This is a production of 35,000 bottles and one I am happy to recommend.

Decanter – Under the leadership of Maria Flora Fuligni since 1971, along with her long-time right-hand Dr Daniela Perino - now the estate’s CEO - Fuligni is one of the denomination’s most consistent performers. The 2018 does not disappoint: it epitomises the elegance of the vintage. A captivating synthesis of florals and earth, the nose radiates pressed violet, lavender and rose with truffle and tobacco accents. It expands in the mouth with flavour rather than weight or brawn. Red currants and orange are amplified by piercing acidity, and well-formed, magnificently textured tannins are chalky and adequately padded, giving layers and profundity. Not pushed beyond its capacity, this will drink beautifully over the next decade.

Wine Enthusiast – Freshly turned soil, spent coffee grounds and pencil shavings are on the nose with just a hint of dried cherry opening onto a palate bursting with fresh cherries and orange peel, structured by tannins that are welcoming but nonetheless hold their integrity.

js96

James Suckling – Composed entirely of Sangiovese, the 2019 Fontalloro is a compelling wine, with layers of graphite, leather, cherry licorice, and Mediterranean herbs. Medium to full bodied, it has a weightless feel, although it is not lacking for concentration and ripe tannins. This continues to improve and evolve as it opens, so if opening now, it would be worth decanting.

rp94

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2019 Fontalloro is all Sangiovese that is aged in new and second-year barriques for up to 20 months. This vintage is represented by a production of 45,000 bottles. The wine opens to a medium-dark garnet color with lots of rich fruit and oak spice. The tannins are dry and the wine is slightly thinner that I would have expected, especially for a vintage that is identified by extra concentration. With time in the glass, Fontalloro relaxes to show more volume and a broader presentation of dark fruit aromas.

Wine Enthusiast – Heavy reduction on the nose of this wine meets blackberries, violets, gravel and tar, while vanilla sneaks out later. The palate is a chocolaty-berry blend with heat both peppery and spicy, then pivots elegantly to vanilla and baking spices. Dense but not cloying, it has pliant tannins and glittering acid.

js96

James Suckling – This has gorgeous aromas of blackberries, blackcurrants, peppercorns, cloves, mocha, hazelnuts and dried herbs. Polished and creamy, with a medium to full body and firm, velvety tannins. Long, supple and elegant. Delicious already, but better from 2024.

James Suckling – Very attractive nose with ripe blackcurrants, spiced chocolate, grilled thyme, hazelnuts and bacon. Notes of tobacco and cedar, too. Full-bodied, so refined and polished with layers of finely chiselled tannins spread evenly across the wine and beautifully integrated. Blooming fruit with spicy herbs, peppermint and violets. Very long and persistent with a steady, mineral sensation in the finish. Drink or hold.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2020 Biserno is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small part Petit Verdot. This is an enriched and profound wine with round tones of black fruit, spice, cured tobacco and tarry smoke. Biserno is shapely and generous with a full-bodied approach that is accented by crushed stone and pencil shaving. You get a lot of intensity and texture with this opulent, cellar-worthy wine.
