Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The NV Brut Premiere Cuvee is exceptionally polished and refined from the very first taste. Lemon, grapefruit, green pears and flowers are some of the many notes that are woven together in this classy, totally polished wine. The two-plus years of bottle age post-disgorgement are a great example of how first-class NV Champagnes can develop beautifully in bottle, something I have seen time and again with Bruno Paillard’s wines. Hints of hazelnut, almond, crushed rocks and pastry add elements of complexity, yet the wine retains its classic sense of energy and vibrancy.

Originating from France, Pinot Meunier stands distinctively in the family of Pinot grapes, often overshadowed by its popular siblings, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc. This grape is a vital component in many traditional Champagne blends, contributing vibrant fruitiness and a soft texture that balances the overall taste. While it's mostly recognized for its role in sparkling wines, Pinot Meunier can also be found as a still wine, exuding aromatic profiles of fresh red berries, plums, and sometimes a hint of floral notes. Unlike other grapes that thrive in various climates, this varietal prefers cooler regions, primarily the northern parts of the Champagne region in France. Over the years, wine enthusiasts have started to recognize its individual charm, paving the way for single-varietal Pinot Meunier wines that celebrate its unique character and depth. As you sip on a glass, the subtle complexities of this grape transport you to the verdant vineyards of its origin. An experience that every wine lover should savor.
Pinot Meunier, a distinct member of the Pinot grape family, is primarily known for its significant role in Champagne production. Often overshadowed by its more famous siblings, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier offers a unique profile. While its name translates to "miller" in French, referring to the powdery, flour-like appearance of its leaves, the wine it produces is anything but ordinary. Pinot Meunier wines tend to present a delightful fruitiness, with aromatic undertones of red berries, plums, and sometimes even floral nuances. This grape brings freshness and vivacity to the wines it graces.
While Pinot Meunier has its roots deeply planted in France, especially the Champagne region, it's not confined to this territory alone. In Champagne, it's celebrated as a vital ingredient in many sparkling wine blends, adding vibrancy and structure. Beyond France, Germany has shown a rising interest in this grape, where it's known as Schwarzriesling. The cooler climates of Oregon in the US and parts of Australia have also embraced Pinot Meunier, producing single-varietal wines that showcase its multifaceted character.
The popularity of Pinot Meunier wines has risen steadily, thanks to the recognition of its unique taste profile. In the realm of Champagne, renowned houses like Krug and Bollinger have championed its value in their blends. However, as wine enthusiasts explore its potential further, single-varietal Pinot Meunier wines, especially those from the Champagne region, have gained traction. Regions like Oregon and Victoria in Australia are also producing some noteworthy Pinot Meunier wines that are earning accolades on the global stage.
Identifying value often hinges on finding the balance between quality and price. While top-tier Champagnes that use Pinot Meunier can command premium prices, there are numerous options that offer excellent value. Many producers in the Champagne region are crafting remarkable Pinot Meunier dominant blends or even single-varietal bottles that won't break the bank. Similarly, emerging regions like Oregon or parts of Germany are introducing wines that highlight the grape's intrinsic qualities at affordable price points.
Pinot Meunier wines, with their fresh fruitiness, pair harmoniously with a variety of dishes. For those indulging in sparkling variants, consider pairing with lighter fare such as oysters, sushi, or goat cheese salads. The still red versions, exhibiting berry-forward notes, complement dishes like duck, roasted turkey, or even mushroom risottos. Its versatility also extends to slightly spicy Asian dishes or smoked salmon, emphasizing its adaptability across diverse cuisines. Like all wines, personal preference plays a role, so experimenting with pairings can lead to delightful culinary discoveries.
