About This Wine

A selection of rosés for summer, including this year's do-not-miss rosé

As warm weather makes a tentative appearance in the southern States - already firmly arrived for those of you in more northern climes - and as the wines from Europe start to arrive en masse, our staff tastings focus on wines of appeal for the coming months. This selection is of the perfect warmer weather wine - Rosé.

Rosé has made giant strides with Australia wine lovers over the past decade as it is the consummate all-occasion wine - great as a pre-meal aperitif, tremendously versatile with food, and deeply refreshing by itself, served chilled and no matter how hot the weather.

Here are our six most popular rosés - one local and five French - finishing up with what we think is the standout, do-not-miss rosé of the year.

Fontanet Rosé $15.99 Spicy nose with notes of ripe raspberry. Round with flavours of cherry, strawberry, watermelon and pomegranate. A delicious crisp and dry rosé.

La Tours Travers Bordeaux Rosé $15.99 Pretty pale pink colour. Flattering nose with red fruits aromas. This is a dry, lively and vibrant rosé with crisp cranberry and strawberry sorbet flavours.

Port Phillip Estate Salasso Rosé $24.99 An attractive pale salmon in hue. The nose is bright and aromatically diverse with notes of strawberry, orange peel and dry herb. Fresh berry flavours lend a soft yet vibrant texture to the palate, leading to a full length and a finish of red apple, talc, and driving acidity. Refreshingly moreish.

By.Ott Cote de Provence Rosé $38.99 In a compellingly beautiful bottle, the taste is full, fresh and crisp with echoes of the fruity aroma amplified by citrus zest and sweet spices of cinnamon and cardamom.

Domaine Bel Eouve Coteaux D'Aix en Provence Rosé $24.99 A beautifully light, crisp rose from Provence. The nose reveals aromas of red fruits and white flowers. It has an engaging, well-balanced mouthfeel full of elegance and finesse with a lingering finish.

And here's the knock-out rosé: "Had a blind tasting last year with over 40 roses at all price points. And not only was this (Riotor) the best in show, it was also the least expensive. Clean with the right amount of fruit matched with the right amount of acid. The type of rosé that evaporates quickly.” Michael Madrigale, Head Sommelier, Bar Boulud and Boulud Sud, NYC Château Riotor Cote de Provence Rosé $29.99 (also available in Magnum $59.99).

(If we run out of a rosé, we'll include another one that's equally lovely).
