James Halliday – Lightish crimson colour; riddled with white pepper; savoury first and fruity second, though the silk of the cherry/plum flavours here is captivating in itself. There's almost a cranberried tanginess to this wine; it's certainly lively. Fennel, cured meat and assorted dry spice notes slowly build an impression of significant complexity. It's not a heavy wine in any way but its premium quality is certain.
About This Wine
This is only the second release of this estate grown Syrah. In fact, all Eden Road Syrah wines are estate grown, coming, as they do, from a single block of vines rooted in the decomposed granite soils of Murrumbateman. The vines here, only some 500 metres from Clonakilla, were planted in 1994. The wine was fermented in open tanks with a portion of whole bunches before being pressed to 500 litre French oak (30% new) for 14 months. From a ‘Goldilocks’ vintage for Canberra – not too hot nor too cold – this super complex, spicy, inky, aromatic and juicy Syrah underlines the exciting potential of this vineyard and of Canberra in general. The palate offers a potent mix of red and black cherry fruit, ferrous and tapenade-like complexity, and a finish that is long, savoury and energetic. The note below captures it well.
