Wine Enthusiast – Pink grapefruit, nectarine and green apple get a savory bite of garden hose and petrol on the nose of this wine. Limes and lots of green apple slices take over on the palate. The wine finishes stony with fruit and rocks, from quartz and slate to peaches and nectarines, and finally an astringent, nutty note of almond skins.

James Suckling – A medium-bodied white with aromas of chopped apples, chamomile and mango stones. There’s good weight and ripeness here, even some nuttiness.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – "The 2022 Mother Block Skin Contact White is a blend of Vermentino (41%), Ansonica (19%), Pecorino (19%), Falanghina (14%), Moscato Giallo (5%) Grechetto (1%) and Nosiola (1%). The fruit was co-fermented and is a golden hazy yellow in the glass. On the nose, there are musk sticks, blood orange, citrus oil, beeswax, creamed honey, cold toast and a host of other textural, yellow fruit characters, loquat among them. The palate follows suit and rolls over the tongue in the pillowy way that skin contact white wine can do. The texture from the skin tempers the purity of acidity, but the length of flavor through the finish remains untouched. Very good, lovely wine. Kudos for procuring the out-of-the-way varieties." - Erin Larkin (Robert Parker Wine Advocate)

Originating from the Mediterranean regions, Vermentino is a light-skinned grape variety known for its crisp, aromatic, and high-acid white wines. Its resilience to the warm climates of the regions it grows in results in wines that are refreshing and zesty, often with citrusy and herbal notes. When one thinks of coastal wines that capture the essence of sea breezes and sunlit terraces, Vermentino surely comes to mind. Historically, this grape has thrived in areas like Sardinia, Liguria, and Corsica, where it has been cultivated for centuries. The wines produced from Vermentino often have a signature salinity, making them excellent companions for a wide variety of dishes, particularly seafood. Its growing popularity has led to its cultivation in newer regions, further enriching the narrative of this exceptional grape variety.
Vermentino is primarily recognized for its white wines that shine with crispness, freshness, and aromatic complexity. These wines are typically medium-bodied and possess a distinctly high acidity, making them incredibly refreshing. On the palate, Vermentino wines often present flavors of green apple, lime, and pear, coupled with intriguing notes of almond and a hint of green herbs. Some Vermentino wines also offer a characteristic minerality, reminiscent of the coastal terrains they come from. Depending on the region and winemaking techniques, one might also detect subtle nuances of floral aromatics or a light creaminess, especially if the wine has undergone lees aging.
Vermentino wines are deeply rooted in the Mediterranean regions. The grape finds its heartland in Italy, primarily on the island of Sardinia, and in the coastal regions of Liguria and Tuscany. It's also a prominent grape in Corsica, where it goes by the name "Malvoisie de Corse." Moreover, Vermentino is grown in southern France, particularly in the Provence and Languedoc regions where it is sometimes called "Rolle." In recent years, winemakers in the New World regions, like California and Australia, have also taken an interest in this grape, expanding its global footprint.
The best Vermentino wines often hail from the grape's traditional homes. Sardinia's Gallura region produces a DOCG Vermentino labeled as "Vermentino di Gallura", known for its concentrated flavors and aging potential. Liguria, with its Cinque Terre Vermentino, is celebrated for its refined and aromatic expressions of the grape. In Corsica, the Patrimonio region crafts some of the most esteemed Vermentino wines, embodying a balance of fruitiness and minerality. However, the beauty of Vermentino is in its versatility, and many regions outside its traditional homes, including parts of California, are producing commendable bottles that showcase the grape's potential.
In general, Vermentino wines offer exceptional value. Their prices are often reasonable, especially when compared to some other white wine varieties with similar profiles. Entry-level Vermentino wines from regions like Sardinia or Languedoc are especially affordable and provide a delightful introduction to the grape's character. That said, like any wine type, there are premium Vermentino wines, especially those from sought-after regions or parcels and those crafted with special winemaking techniques. These can command higher prices. However, even among these, many are still considered to be reasonably priced for the quality they deliver. For those seeking a vibrant and aromatic white wine without breaking the bank, Vermentino is a choice that seldom disappoints.
