Calo Rioja Tempranillo 2016
Un-oaked red from winemaker Javier Murua out of Rioja. As always, the packaging is spot on. It’s the kind of wine that would service a broad population with ease. Welcome addition in the mix of Spanish, affordable alternatives in Australia. Friday night office drinks here we come!
Ripe berry fruit scents, raspberry, strawberry, then dark chocolate, a dusting of coffee, faint new leather scent, green olive. Lots going on in an ostensibly simple wine style. Perfume seduces, palate backs it up – juicy, sweet fruited (not overly), crisp in texture, touch of chalky pucker, super easy drinking.

World Wine – A lovely drink, at an excellent price. Attractively packaged too. Vibrant and lively but with some guts, some grind. Violets, black and red berries, cola, jubey blackcurrant. Love the firmness through the finish. The suggestion of vanillin. The perfumed aromatics. The fresh-but-controlled feel. You’d go this, for sure.
