About This Wine

The biodynamic Château La Grolet is the sister property of Château Peybonhomme-les-Tours. It also lies on the right bank, in the appellation of Côtes de Bourg, between the Côtes de Blaye (to the north) and Fronsac (to the southeast). Quite unlike the monotonous flats of the Medoc, the Côtes de Bourg is an area of beautiful landscapes and is sometimes referred to as the 'little Switzerland of Gironde'. This is a Bordeaux appellation with an open and proud country personality. Here, the gravel-rich terroir makes for a more firmly structured, virile red than its sibling (Peybonhomme), though with just as much class. With its balance of ripeness and freshness, the 2015 vintage should be considered a triumph.

This year's blend is Merlot (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). The wine is crafted in a mixture of concrete and wooden vessels without any additions and the wine is bottled without fining or filtration. Only a little sulphur is used at bottling, otherwise the wine sees no additions at all. The nose, although deeply set at this stage, seeps graphite, blackberry liqueur, plum skin and ripe red fruits. The mouthfeel is intense, compact, fresh and balanced. There is plenty of dark, savoury fruit with silky tannins promising to meld beautifully with any moist beef or lamb dish--steak frites, please. The wine is pure and clean, yet lacks nothing in the character stakes. In short, a hearty, super authentic Bordeaux country red that represents, to our minds, remarkably wallet-friendly value.

Wines from Bordeaux

Bordeaux is in the south west of France and is one of the most famous wine regions in the world. It is the largest wine producing region in France, the vast majority being red wines. While it does make large quantities of everyday table wine, outside of Europe, it is mostly noted for producing some of the most expensive and prestigious wines in the world.

The Garonne and Dordogne rivers run through the region and together naturally irrigate the land while the soils are rich in calcium owing to their limestone content. These two rivers connect and run through to the Atlantic Ocean splitting Bordeaux into 3 distinct parts. We have the left bank, the right bank, and the area between the two rivers called Entre-Deux-Mers.

While in Australia we often see straight Shiraz, Cabernet or Merlots, Bordeaux does not generally produce red wine without blending. The “Bordeaux Blend” is one of the most classic and popular styles of red wine that has spread throughout France as well as throughout the New World.

On the left bank, typical top-quality blends are 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Merlot. On the right bank top quality blends are typically made of 70% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.

In general you can expect red wines from Bordeaux to taste more earthy in flavour compared to those from the New World wine regions that tend to be more fruit flavour driven.
