Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf Du Pape Rouge 2014
80% Grenache, with 10% Mourvèdre, 7% Syrah and a dash of Cinsault. Marcoux's Châteauneuf is drawn from 13 parcels of vines biodynamically farmed vines dotted across the appellation. There is a wide range of soil types from sandy soils in Charbonnières, to red clay and galets in L'Arnesque and Les Bouquets, to limestone and marne in Les Esquirons and Beaurenard, to red clay and gravel in Gallimardes, Les Serres and Les Plagnes. This Marcoux are able to produce a wine that truly reflects the Châteauneuf terroir as a whole. It also allows Marcoux to craft balanced wines year in year out as each parcel is vinified separately prior to the blending each year.
The average age of the vines that supply fruit for this wine is already impressive (50+ years old) and that number is significantly boosted this year by the addition of Marcoux's 100+ year old vines in Charbonnières, les Esquierons and les Gallimardes (entirely declassified from the Vieilles Vignes cuvée).
Naturally fermented and raised without any new oak, this is 2014 Châteauneuf at its best, nimbly balancing its perfumed, textural palate with crunchy freshness and vibrant minerality. There was no Vieilles Vignes bottled here in 2014 because of the reduced yields and a strict selection so there here is some fabulous depth here and deep imprint of roast blackberry and truffle hints from the old vines.
“Biodynamic, no new oak. Lifted plum notes with sage, thyme and some spicy hints. Full-bodied, very ripe fruit and a rounded, juicy mouthfeel. Ample ripe tannin and perfectly balanced acids. Doesn’t quite have the weight of more concentrated years, but it does have freshness, liveliness, detail and finesse. This is a successful Marcoux and it will age well. At once vivid n fruit but generous and comforting in body. (No Vieilles Vignes made in 2014.)” 93 points, Tim Atkin MW Rhone Report

Antonio Galloni/Vinous – "(aged in a combination of concrete tanks and old foudres and barriques): Brilliant ruby-red. High-pitched, mineral-laced red and dark berry and potpourri scents are complemented by notes of anise and Asian spices. Silky and open-knit on entry, offering sweet raspberry and lavender pastille flavors that tighten up slowly with air and pick up a subtle, exotic blood orange nuance. Shows wonderful clarity and lift on the impressively long finish, which is given shape by silky tannins." 92-94 points, Josh Reynolds, vinous.com
