The King Valley is known for its stunning natural beauty, rolling hills and fertile soils. Perfect conditions for growing grapes. Valle del Re is a celebration of the King Valley’s Italian varieties and a tribute to the passion of the growers and winemakers that call this wine region home. The name itself means “Valley of the King” in Italian. The Valle del Re range is dedicated to the careful selection of Italian grape varieties from some of the best vineyards in the King Valley.
The lead up to vintage 2023 was challenging to say the least. Experiencing a third La Niña year in a row made the 2022-2023 growing season a record-setting year from a weather perspective. With volatile weather conditions at flowering, crops were down in the King Valley, but fruit quality, and ultimately wine quality, is outstanding.
The fruit for the 2023 Pinot Grigio was picked in early March at 11.8° baumé. The grapes were picked in the cool early morning, pressed off skins quickly into tank for settling and sensory assessment. Racked carefully off gross lees, a cool and constant alcoholic fermentation at 16°C was completed over 3 weeks. This allowed the retainment of fresh and varietal aromas and flavours while providing fine texture and mouthfeel. The wine was left on yeast lees with stirring to protect the freshness of the wine while adding further complexity.
Our Pinot Grigio has been made to reflect the Italian expression of this grape variety. The nose offers up an abundance of Nashi pear, green apple, citrus skin and ginger root. The vibrant palate displays flavours of Nashi pear, green apple and fresh almonds with subtle white flower and quince notes. The bright acid backbone complements the refined fruit leading to a crisp, balanced finish.
