Oratoire Cairanne Reserve Des Seigneurs 2014
60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah. The Res. des Seigneurs is the first of the Domaine's three old-vine, Mourvèdre-rich reds. The Alary vineyards are located on steep hills in predominantly two lieux-dits of Cairanne; Saint-Martin and Les Douyes. For the Reserve des Seigneurs, the brothers blend old vine parcels (average vine age across these plantings is roughly 65 years) of Grenache and Mourvèdre from the former site, and a little Syrah from the latter. The yields can dip as low as 20 hectolitres per hectare depending on the vintage. Following fermentation with indigenous yeast - in a range of concrete and large wooden fermenters - the wine is matured for 24 months in neutral, large format oak and bottled without fining or filtration. No sulphur was used during the winemaking and only a touch at bottling. 2014 is such a fine, elegant vintage for this cuvée. Back to its classic blend - following 2013's Syrah-rich cameo - it's showing fine intensity of juicy strawberry and floral fruit, all very aromatic and fresh, complemented by refreshing spice and fine crisp tannins. An exceptionally pure expression of Cairanne.
