Shaw & Smith M3 Chardonnay 2015

Shaw & Smith M3 Chardonnay 2015

This undoubtedly one of the best chardonnays in Australia. Serious and built to last, it’s refined and elegant and made with true craftsmanship, using wild ferments and allowing the fruit to shine. Stone fruit, lemon zest and grapefruit are at the heart of this white combined with subtle biscuity notes. It’s intense and weighty, balanced by fresh, crisp acid. Pair it with blackened flathead and tomato chilli chutney.

This Shaw and Smith from the Adelaide Hills ticks all the right boxes. I've tasted spectacular white burgundies which are truly profound, if not life changing, but I would need to have bought lots of properties in Sydney to support such a habit. This chardonnay is just fine for my palate and purse. It is truly well made with just the right lick of oak balanced by white stone fruit flavours. The length is long and satisfying. Will age beautifully.

Complex Adelaide Hills chardonnay at its best. A nose redolent of white peach, citrus, yeast lees, light sulphide and iced biscuits. A rich yet structured mouthful with a long aftertaste.

Really good vintage. Really good wine. A winner for Shaw and Smith for some years, and this is absolutely one of the best. Comes off the Lenswood vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. Light toasty stone fruit and grapefruit with a creamy texture spliced with a subtle lees character and some understated minerality. Lovely balance.

One of Australia’s great chardonnays. Incredibly complex with wafting nutty top notes, plus hints of oatmeal and citrus zest. The palate is bright and wildly intense with lemon delicious, white nectarine and nougat. Bright and superbly well-integrated acidity. Although this fine Adelaide Hills wine is completely delicious now, it is an infant and will grow and evolve with time in bottle.

Power and complexity define this wine, which is one of the benchmarks in Australian chardonnay. It’s equally elegant, with subtle stonefruit, citrus and spicy oak aromas. It’s tightly structured – buy one for now and more for a year or two – but is still enjoyable straight off the bat. The balance between tannins, intense fruit and acid is spot on.

Consistently acclaimed as one of Australia’s top chardonnays, this is fronted by lovely rich pear and stone fruit flavours with honey and nutty toffee notes adding depth and complexity, the palate wonderfully intense and focused and lingering for ages in the mouth. Have with crayfish or grilled squab.

This Adelaide Hills Chardonnay is sleek and refreshing. Its a real upmarket head turner that garners attention for its incredible flavour yet inherently vitality. A class act from first sip, it has that sainty texture that makes you want to gulp.

The Wine Front – The journey of M3 chardonnay is the journey of Australian chardonnay in microcosm. Here we have power; here we have funk-driven complexity; here we have a long sling of apple-like acidity. It’s a fine, detailed, aspirational white wine, crackling with quality, endowed with just-enough texture and just-enough fruit flavour. There’s a coiled aspect to this wine; its best days are not yet with us, but they’re coming. It’s all balanced on a pin head, in the best of ways.

James Halliday – Largely ex the Lenswood vineyard, handpicked, chilled overnight; whole bunch pressed, wild yeast fermented in new and used French barriques; nine months maturation. A seamless fusion of white peach, biscuity oak and fresh acidity. 12.5% alcohol; screw cap Drink to 2023.
