The Wine Front – It’s cool and spicy but it has both the fruit and the ripeness to (well and truly) carry the style. This is an excellent release; stylish; complex; steady-handed but with just enough x-factor. It’s all peppercorns and black pepper, black cherry into plum, and woodsmoke. It’s generally painted in oils but there’s a watercolour aspect. It feels elegant. It feels as though it’s going to mature well. And, as it breathes, a pretty/floral side to its personality is revealed. Very very nice wine. Monty for the medium term cellar.
James Halliday – Hand-picked, crushed, destemmed, 24 days fermentation and maceration, matured in French barriques (70% new) for 12 months, then transferred to a 5yo 4000l French foudre for a further 6 months, 9% ?14 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the Crayeres Vineyard added. The immediate energy and drive the wine has lifts it out of the ruck, extending the length of the palate and allowing the undeniably complex black fruits full airplay. This is a classy wine, period, full stop.
Jancis Robinson – From vines planted in 2008. Fermented and macerated for 24 days in one-tonne fermenters and then aged in for 12 months in French barriques (70% new from Vallaurine in the Rhône) before being racked into a five year-old 4,000l foudre for six months. It was blended with 9% Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from the same vineyard before bottling in December 2015. Pungent, smoky, almost cordite nose and firm and ambitious on the palate. Serious stuff. Very long with the considerable tannins almost smothered by the intense violet fruit. Just 500 dozen bottles filled. Impressive but not ready.
About This Wine
This new wine shows the true – and exemplary – potential of the Wrattonbully wine region as an extraordinary cool climate region for Australian Shiraz. The wine shows wonderful pepper (aromatic – not reductive), blackberry and juicy plum flavours, whilst the palate is very earthy with gorgeous supple and lingering tannins.
