James Halliday – Long an icon across my memory bank, as well as it still serves me: from my early days in retail to time in New York as a sommelier and even Paris, where it appeared momentarily on the list at Willie's. A seminal moment when Australian wine got a look in. And now? Classic. In an Australian sense. Lightened up over the years in terms of the oak, but the forcefield of graphite-bitter-chocolate-bouquet grain tannins is the driver. Long. Mulch, red and blackcurrant scents and a swab of olive linger. This is very good, auguring for a long life.

About This Wine

Dark cherry red with a crimson hue. The bouquet is elegant and inviting, notes of cedar and licorice combine with rich, ripe cassis, violets and the quintessential Coonawarra "sea spray" note. The palate opens with a burst of cassis and mocha. It is structural, yet generous, dark and brooding with restraint and the promise of enjoyment for years to come. The tannins are sublime, giving an insight to the ageability of this wine, yet in its youth, it is enjoyable as an elegant full-bodied red wine.

Coonawarra Wine

The Coonawarra wine region is most known for its Cabernet Sauvignon that is produced on red “terra rossa” soil. This clay soil is one of the most notable in the “New World” of wine covering an area of only 15kmx2km. The terra rossa soil also overlies soft, penetrable limestone and it is this uncommon combination that makes this region so special.

“Cabernet Sauvignon is the most widely planted variety in the world and Coonawarra is one of the few regions where free draining soils and maritime ripening conditions achieve the ultimate varietal expression.” Coonawarra.org

From Coonawarra Cabernet you can expect a medium bodied red with powerful yet polished tannins, luscious dark berry fruit, herb and mint flavours as well as satisfying length.

While half of region’s production is Cabernet, the limestone soils also suit planting of Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon blanc.
