Critic reviews

Wine Enthusiast – A little scratchy on the nose, but otherwise it exudes pure aromas of cassis and raspberry. The palate is juicy, racy and snappy but full and structured, while the flavors of raspberry, plum and blackberry get sweetness in the form of coconut and vanilla-infused coffee. Less soft and bodied than previous vintages but a big winner nonetheless.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2008 Collecion Privada was sourced from 2 vineyards ranging in age from 55-60 years. It was aged for 18 months in 100% new French and American oak. Loaded with spice, incense, and floral notes along with toasty oak and black fruits, on the palate it is dense, round, plush, and succulent. Give this pleasure-bent Rioja another 5-6 years of cellaring and enjoy it through 2028.

About this Wine

Sierra Cantabria Colección Privada portrays the maximum expressiveness of Tempranillo from our 50+ year old vineyards, Los Terreros and Jararte. We apply the same viticulture as our great grandparents, with more than a century of experience as grapegrowers in the search of the natural balance of the plant. The winemaking, as in the past, combines the carbonic maceration and the traditional vinification. Once completed the alcoholic fermentation, the ensemble is done and, afterwards, the malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak and American oak in which the wine ages 18 months. The final wine is seductive: elegant in the nose, silky in the mouth with a fluid and creamy finish. Its long memories are of an unctuous wine, with matured red fruit ensembled with lactic notes and spices and nuances of undergrowth.

Wines of Spain

With 2.9 million acres of land planted in wine grapes, Spain is the most widely planted wine producing nation and second largest producer in the world. Many styles of wine are produced in the country most of which are based on native grape varietals.

The two most famous regions are Rioja and Ribera del Duero for their Tempranillo production. Rioja Tempranillo (the classic) will be lighter and fresher with red fruit flavours as compared to those from Ribera del Duero that are often deep purple, higher in alcohol with more tannins and intense black fruit character. Rioja is also known for producing Garnacha (Grenache), as well as rich, nutty whites from the indigenous Viura varietal.

In the Catalonia region, Spain is recognized for making a sparkling wine in the traditional method but using native grape varieties. This is called Cava. Priorat, a subregion within Catalonia specializes in making still red blends of Garnacha, Carignan and often Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in a bold and full-bodied style. Together with Rioja, wines from Priorat have achieved DOCa/DOQ status signifying their quality.

Sherry is Spain’s famous fortified wine which can either be completely dry, lusciously sweet or somewhere in between. This is made in the southern region of Jerez.

Other notable Spanish wine styles include: Monastrell (AKA. Mataro/Mourvèdre), produced in the Jumilla region and refreshing white Albariño and Verdejo from north western Galacia.
