Description

Callejuela La Choza Pago Macharnudo is a white wine without denomination of origin produced by the winery Callejuela in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz.

Callejuela was founded in 1980 by Francisco Romero Blanco, after spending more than 20 years as a labourer. He started making musts in some small facilities and selling to the large wineries in the area. In 1998, the third generation of the Blanco family took over the vines and the winery, creating the brand Callejuela.

Currently, Callejuela has 28 hectares of vineyard and 700 butts where they age their wines. Their main philosophy lies within the vineyard; for a good ageing there must be good grapes.

Callejuela La Choza Pago Macharnudo is part of a series of three wines made in the same way from Palomino. However, the grapes come from three different farms, showing the maximum expression, the personality and the richness of nuances of the various terroirs of the area.

Callejuela La Choza Pago Macharnudo is a wine made from Palomino from the vineyard Las Chozas, with 4.4 hectares, located in the farm Pago Añina, at 74 metres of altitude, planted on albariza soils. It is the mildest farm of the three.

The harvest is carried out by hand. After the fermentation, this wine is aged for 7 months in manzanillo butts under the yeast cap (velo flor).

Callejuela La Choza Pago Macharnudo is a fluid, elegant wine with volume. On the nose, the notes of ripe white fruit stand out, on a very subtle flowery background. In the mouth, it is dense, easy to drink and fresh. It is the most balanced one of the three.

Wines of Spain

With 2.9 million acres of land planted in wine grapes, Spain is the most widely planted wine producing nation and second largest producer in the world. Many styles of wine are produced in the country most of which are based on native grape varietals.

The two most famous regions are Rioja and Ribera del Duero for their Tempranillo production. Rioja Tempranillo (the classic) will be lighter and fresher with red fruit flavours as compared to those from Ribera del Duero that are often deep purple, higher in alcohol with more tannins and intense black fruit character. Rioja is also known for producing Garnacha (Grenache), as well as rich, nutty whites from the indigenous Viura varietal.

In the Catalonia region, Spain is recognized for making a sparkling wine in the traditional method but using native grape varieties. This is called Cava. Priorat, a subregion within Catalonia specializes in making still red blends of Garnacha, Carignan and often Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in a bold and full-bodied style. Together with Rioja, wines from Priorat have achieved DOCa/DOQ status signifying their quality.

Sherry is Spain’s famous fortified wine which can either be completely dry, lusciously sweet or somewhere in between. This is made in the southern region of Jerez.

Other notable Spanish wine styles include: Monastrell (AKA. Mataro/Mourvèdre), produced in the Jumilla region and refreshing white Albariño and Verdejo from north western Galacia.
