Gamay is the only red variety of Beaujolais. The ten best villages of Beaujolais no longer mention the region on their labels, only their own village. For several decades the region suffered from the perception of poor quality and cheap and simple wines. The last two decades have seen a revolution with younger producers and more natural wine-making.
Now with many producers organically farming with lower yields and moving away from carbonic vinification to more classic vinification, the potential of this region is now being recognised by the many younger producers who are keen to make their mark. Not only is the land affordable, as a result the wines are also extremely good value making these among the very best values of the entire Burgundy region.
The revolution in quality here really deserves discovery, the wines are full of joy and you will be too when you realise how much enjoyment can be had for so little cost.
