Jean-Luc and Anne Mader founded their small (but high quality) family domaine in 1981, after having worked at the local winemaking cooperative although these days it's their son, Jérôme, who oversees most of the work in the vineyards and cellar. They're headquartered in the village of Hunawihr, with vineyard holdings spanning roughly 10 ha's, which they farm organically (and, more recently, biodynamically). They're lucky to include prized holdings in the famous 'Rosacker' and now in Schlossberg. Everything here is done by hand from start to finish, and typically the Mader whites incorporate large percentages of whole bunches in their ferments, lending depth and longevity to their wines.
Jerome is fanatical about quality so yields are kept very low and selections for all wines are extremely strict ensuring the highest quality in every bottle. The entire range of wines from the Mader family taste true to their grape varieties and vineyard origins and all represent fantastic value.
The Rosacker is made from 60+ year old vines located near the top of the vineyard which is also home to the famous 'Clos St Hune' Riesling from Trimbach. Yields were kept low which resulted in a concentrated wine of great intensity of character with notes of green mango peel, citrus blossoms, guava, freshly cut green apple, white peach, pineapple, white flowers, and lime leaf with undercurrents of smoke, flint, and crushed river stone. This wine has real finesse with rich, intense citrus fruit and a long outstanding finish.

Alsatian wine
Alsace is a unique wine region in North Eastern France, bordering Germany and having also been under German control for much of its existence. Due to this influence, unlike other French regions, wines from Alsace are mostly single varietal bottlings and are also labelled with the variety. They also are legally required to use a tall slimmer bottle called flûtes d'Alsace, that is also commonly seen with German wines.
Almost all the wine produced in the region is white (90%) except for Pinot Noir which is used mainly for sparkling wine. Alsace is most known for its Riesling, which is dry, fresh and floral in its youth but develops complex mineral and flint character with age. Following behind is Gewurztraminer with signature spice and beautiful lychee aromatics. The smell of this wine is intoxicating, it is used to make dry but also late harvest dessert wines. Pinot Gris is also a prized variety of the region with its combination of crisp acidity and savory spice as well as ripe stone fruit flavours.
In Autumn humidity builds up to facilitate the development of “noble rot” to produce late-picked sweet wines. In Alsace there are two classifications for late harvest wines: Vendange Tardive (VT) and Sélection de Grains Nobles (SGN). VT for regular late harvest wines and SGN meaning grapes affected by noble rot.
Other varieties grown here include Pinot Blanc, Muscat, Auxerrois, Chasselas and Sylvaner.
