Description

The grapes used for the Redoma Branco originate from old vines growing on the right bank of the Douro River, at an altitude of between 500 and 600 metres. Here, the predominant grape varieties are Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho and Gouveio. The mica schist soils in which these vines thrive lend the resulting wines plenty of minerality, elegance and vibrant freshness.

Grape Varieties: Rabigato, Códega, Viosinho, Donzelinho, Dorinto and others. Average Vine Age 65-85 years.

Soil: Schist

Tasting Notes: This Redoma is an outstanding example of the Douro Valley’s potential to produce crisp, linear and uncomplicated white wines without underplaying the unmistakable complexity of the old vines, the terroir and the mica-schist soils of this region. Fresh and delicate on the nose, this wine’s complexity and character is supported by a subtle fruity profile with notes of citrus and pineapple, floral nuances as well as herbaceous and nutty hints. The palate shows good structure and excellent acidity, following through to a dry and piquant finish. This Douro white delights with its fantastic balance and ageing potential.

Vinification: After being meticulously sorted on our sorting table, the fruit was gently pressed and left to settle for about 24 hours. Alcoholic fermentation took place spontaneously, in 228L and 500L French oak barrels, where the wine also aged for 8 months.

Ageing: 8 months in French oak barrels.

Gastronomy: Oysters, oven-baked fish, poultry and other white meats. Vegetarian options: dishes based on root vegetables (turnips, sweet potato, beetroot), Caesar salad, cheese. Suitable for Vegans & Vegetarians.

Portuguese Wine

Portugal as a wine producing country is sometimes unfortunately overshadowed by its European neighbours, however, it has a long wine making history and the region’s popularity is growing as people start to take notice of its quality and unique character.

The country has a large array of native grape varietals which are used to produce an abundant variety of different wines. Nevertheless, the two most popular wines styles exported are from Vinho Verde and the Douro regions.

Douro is the home of Port wine, and the city of Oporto where the wine gets its name. It is one of the major rivers in Portugal, and with fertile soils around its banks, increased attention has also been given to the Douro region’s non fortified wine production in recent years. Full bodied and concentrated dry reds made from grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Spanish Tempranillo, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão are all worth a try.

Vinho Verde in the north of Portugal is responsible for producing effervescent, lively, and refreshing white wine that is increasingly becoming Portugal’s most famous. Perfect when served chilled on a hot day, it is known for zingy lime flavours, a sharp minerality and subtle grassiness. The wine is often a blend but will usually be predominantly based on Alvarinho grapes which gives it its unique character.
