Critic reviews

James Suckling – Apple and pear drops with ginger and candied lemons on the nose. Full-bodied with spicy character and plenty of white pepper. Some salt, too. Chalky and extremely minerally. 72% chardonnay, 14% pinot meunier and 14% pinot noir.

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – A blend of Sélèque's favorite barrel from each of his parcels every year, intended to reflect the vintage conditions across the ensemble of his holdings, the 2016 Extra-Brut Partition unwinds in the glass with complex aromas of citrus pith, white flowers, pear and blanched almonds. Medium to full-bodied, deep and chalky, with racy acids and a fine-boned, classically proportioned profile, it concludes with a long, saline finish. It's a terrific wine that I suspect will only go from strength to

Description

The 2016 was the first release of this cuvée, completing Jean-Marc's palette of four Pierry single site, single varietal, single vintage wines under the Soliste label. Like all the Soliste wines, this is fermented entirely in oak barrels, and aged under cork (rather than crown cap) on its lees--in this case, for four years before disgorgement. The grapes come from two adjacent south-facing plots named Les Tartières and Les Porgeons, whose current vines were planted in 1990 and 1985 respectively. They grow in the heart of the Pierry slope, right in the middle, with Tartières stretching above Porgeons. The higher site grows in five feet of clay over Campanian chalk, whereas the layer of clay in Porgeons tapers up to a level of less than one foot. This is a great example of what the Côteaux Sud can do with Chardonnay: a wine with ample body and fruit, coupled with superb tension.
