Poggerino, situated at Radda in the heart of Chianti Classico, is run by highly dedicated brother and sister team of Piero and Benedetta Lanza. Benedetta runs their new agriturismo, whilst Piero strives to produce a wine that best expresses Poggerino’s terroir and the typicity of Sangiovese. The attention to detail verges on fanatical, with biodynamic farming, careful clonal selection, nitrogenous cover crops, extensive canopy management and natural yeasts to ensure the best possible combination of concentration, acidity and ripe tannins. Piero, forever searching and experimenting, has recently introduced Stockinger barrels and several ‘Nomblot’ (egg-shaped concrete fermenter). The resulting wine reflects these labours and is a beautifully balanced and perfumed style of Chianti with floral notes, spice and ripe red cherry and berry fruit, the structured palate rounded by sweet persistent tannin. Bugialla, the single vineyard Riserva made in the best vintages, displays substantial structure and ageing potential.
