About this Wine

The Campos de Luz cooperative is located in Alfamen on the banks of the Ebro, Spain's largest river, which flows from northern Spain to the Mediterranean through numerous wine-growing regions where the Garnacha grape variety is cultivated.
In 2002, several winegrowers in the Cariñena region joined forces for a project. Most of their vineyards are planted with Garnacha, a grape variety perfectly adapted to the mild, dry Mediterranean climate. The older vines produce only small yields, but the resulting wines exhibit a high intensity.

The harvest typically takes place from mid-September to early October. All cellar work is carried out in the modern winery, which was built directly in the vineyards to avoid long transport routes. Only a few Campos de Luz wines are aged in oak barrels. The aim is to create wines with fresh and intense fruit aromas, which is why most wines are aged in stainless steel tanks.

Campos de Luz manages to produce fresh, elegant wines with charm and quality, and all at a very good price-performance ratio.

The 40-80 year old vines grow in flat vineyards with stony alluvial soils. After harvesting, fermentation takes place for 12 days at a temperature of 24°C in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in stainless steel tanks until bottling. It displays a
dark red color in the glass. The nose offers aromas of dark fruits (blackberries, sour cherries). On the palate, juicy fruit flavors and perfectly integrated tannins lead to a long finish. A truly enjoyable wine!

Garnacha Vieja „Carinena – dry“ Campos de Luz is an all-rounder that harmonizes with hearty dishes (roasts, dark meat) or lighter dishes (poultry, vegetables, grilled food) depending on the season.

Wines of Spain

With 2.9 million acres of land planted in wine grapes, Spain is the most widely planted wine producing nation and second largest producer in the world. Many styles of wine are produced in the country most of which are based on native grape varietals.

The two most famous regions are Rioja and Ribera del Duero for their Tempranillo production. Rioja Tempranillo (the classic) will be lighter and fresher with red fruit flavours as compared to those from Ribera del Duero that are often deep purple, higher in alcohol with more tannins and intense black fruit character. Rioja is also known for producing Garnacha (Grenache), as well as rich, nutty whites from the indigenous Viura varietal.

In the Catalonia region, Spain is recognized for making a sparkling wine in the traditional method but using native grape varieties. This is called Cava. Priorat, a subregion within Catalonia specializes in making still red blends of Garnacha, Carignan and often Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon in a bold and full-bodied style. Together with Rioja, wines from Priorat have achieved DOCa/DOQ status signifying their quality.

Sherry is Spain’s famous fortified wine which can either be completely dry, lusciously sweet or somewhere in between. This is made in the southern region of Jerez.

Other notable Spanish wine styles include: Monastrell (AKA. Mataro/Mourvèdre), produced in the Jumilla region and refreshing white Albariño and Verdejo from north western Galacia.
