About This Wine

All winemakers are a bit obsessed with Pinot Noir, because it is the most challenging variety to grow and to make and very unforgiving of mistakes. For our style of Pinot Noir we prefer the flavour profiles from the southern side of Marlborough. These soil types are much older than the Wairau flood plain and have lower fertility and a much higher clay component which gives the wines more depth and structure.

This 2018 release is a blend from 2 certified organic vineyards – our TWR home block here at the winery, and the Clayvin Vineyard in the Southern Valleys which are owned by the Giesen Family. We were very excited to be able to procure some extra organic certified fruit from the Clayvin block as we have seen the quality they have produced over a number of years. 2018 was a wonderful vintage in Marlborough for Pinot Noir. This resultant blend has great fruit weight and power, with the depth of flavour and complexity. The wine has a great approachable fleshiness but also the line and length for some serious cellaring.

TASTING NOTES

This Pinot Noir exhibits gorgeous, fragrant notes of ripe strawberry and omega plum with hints of baking spice, mocha, and some complex savoury undertones. The fleshy, silky tannins combine with vibrant flavours of omega plum and strawberry. The palate has serious weight and flows from fruit purity into more savoury and complex flavours. The wine has great fleshiness and depth and finishes with a lingering persistence of fruit, fine tannin and well-integrated oak. Bottled un-fined and with minimal filtration.

Wines of Marlborough

Marlborough is at the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island and is the leading region in the country, being responsible for 75% of NZ’s wine production and 85% of its exports. Marlborough is internationally renowned for its distinctive style of Sauvignon Blanc, described by some wine writers such as Oz Clarke and George Taber as the best in the world. Australia being such a close neighbour, we get a great number of brands imported into the country.

Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough is grown on well-draining alluvial gravels, with large temperature fluctuations between day and night. These conditions are great for growing grapes that strike a perfect balance between ripeness and acidity. The result is sauvignon blanc that is aromatic, driven by tropical fruit flavours but also supported by an herbaceous and mineral character. Aussies often described Marlborough Savvy Blanc as full of passionfruit flavour.

Despite many consumers having an idea of what Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is, the wine is actually made in a wide range of different styles. Wine makers take advantage of different clones, fermentation styles, lees-stirring and aging regimens to give their wines nuance and differentiate their brand from one another. You may have had sauvignon blanc from Marlborough before, but it is always worth exploring some not so commercial brands if it is a style you enjoy.

Other varieties that are produced in the region include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris.
