Ghiaccio Forte (literally ice fortress) was once a thriving and wine-producing Etruscan city. Today it is one of the better wineries of the Maremma. The cellar is less than a kilometer from the historic settlement. The special winery is in the hands of Filippo Chia, who is also the owner and winemaker of the renowned Montalcino house Castello Romitorio.
The domain is located on the Tuscan coast, just south of Grosseto. Filippo owns about twenty hectares of vineyards, twelve of which are in Morellino di Scansano. The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea provides cooling in the quite warm region, and therefore for beautiful freshness in the grapes, which can ripen perfectly here. Since 2020, the vineyards have been farmed organically.
Although 15% other grapes are allowed, Filippo makes his Morellino (since 2018) from 100% sangiovese. The grapes are harvested by hand and thoroughly selected and destemmed upon arrival in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks. Wood aging does not get this pure sangiovese expression.
The result is a powerful, rich but at the same time supple red wine, Tuscan sangiovese in its entirety. Ripe red cherry fruit, savory spiciness, juicy freshness and a medium body. A delicious wine with rustic Tuscan cuisine, such as pasta or polenta with wild boar ragout. Incidentally, they also store well, up to about five years after harvest.

Wines of Tuscany

Tuscany, or Toscana in Italian, is one of the most iconic Italian regions for wine, scenery, and history. Located in central Italy along the west coast, its production of Sangiovese wines is world renowned. Some of Italy’s most famous subregions for Sangiovese such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano can be found here.
Tuscany makes both simple and top tier, age worthy Sangiovese wines. At entry-level you have a wine that is pizza and pasta friendly with bright and juicy red fruit. On the other hand, the highest quality representations of Sangiovese are remarkably complex with flavours ranging from sour cherry, balsamic, dried herbs and leather to fresh earth, dried flowers, anise and tobacco.
In evidence of the quality produced, Tuscany produces the third highest volume of DOC and DOCG quality wines in Italy, only trailing Piedmont, and Veneto. DOC and DOCG wines are the highest designation for Italian wines, while you will often see the IGT classification used to represent wines from Toscana that do not reach the standards for DOC/G.
There is another unofficial class of Tuscan wines called Super Tuscans which also command high prices. These wines are often made from international wine varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah, with or without Sangiovese.
