Critic reviews

The Wine Front – "This is looking good. Squeaky clean, polished, perfumed and fruit-driven, but with enough flying about the edges to give it some breadth. Musk and bubble-gum cherries, sweet spice notes, a foresty element and a creaminess. It feels plush – at 12% alcohol – but then finishes dry. Apart from anything else – it’s delicious." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

James Halliday – "I'm really digging Tasmanian gamay. Here from Gerald Ellis' Meadowbank vineyard in the Derwent Valley and made by Peter Dredge. Bright and bouncy in hue with wildflower and spice-flecked plum, cranberry and blue fruits, a crushed riverstone savouriness balanced just so with a nice tension between pure fruit and minerally acid velocity. Vivid, delicious and so easy to drink. Will take a chill easily if you want to whack it in the fridge and take it to the beach for rehydration purposes." - Dave Brookes (Halliday Wine Companion)

Description

Since its first release, Meadowbank’s Gamay has generated considerable excitement in the trade. With some foresight, Meadowbank’s original Pinot Block was planted to Gamay in 1987. In 2015, a second small Gamay block (descriptively named ‘Top Woolshed’) joined the ranks. Both are farmed sustainably.

2022 was a cooler, slower-ripening year with good flavour intensity, but unfortunately for Dredgey, very low yielding. Typically, in the cooler years, he doesn’t put the fruit through 100% carbonic, so in 2022 each block was picked separately. The old-vine fruit went through carbonic and the young vine fruit was entirely destemmed. After fermentation it was pressed straight to inert French oak barriques, where it stayed for three months on lees. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration.

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.
