World Wine – Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)

About This Wine

Little Giant Shiraz is crafted from fruit sourced from select premium vineyards of both the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Picked in the cool of the morning to retain freshness, the fruit is de-stemming and fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent nine moths in used large format French and American oak barrels to build structure whilst softening the palate and develop flavour complexity without overt extraction of oak characters.

Vintage 2020: It will be remembered for high quality across the Barossa in 2020 but yields were down. This was in pat due to temperamental spring weather and a hot, ddry summer. Althought the yields were affected by the heatwave of December and January, prudent growers managed this well with careful irrigation and maintaining soil moisture. The quality of the resulting fruit was concentrated and exceptional.

Tasting Note: The Little Giant Shiraz continues to be the favourite in the Wombat family. The wine shows chocolate and mocha characters and the addition of spicier more elegant fruit of the cooloer Eden Valley, adds aromatic lift, interest and freshness. This is a contempoary Barossa Shiraz having pent maturation time in older oak adding subtle vanilla and earty nuances. There's softness on the finish while maintaining freshness and vibrancy. Pair with a chargrilled steak with a peppercorn sauce.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
