Critic reviews

James Suckling – Gris is often criticized for being anodyne. In these sort of hands, however, it is far from it. A textural gris of mid-weighted succulence and admirable refreshment factor. Aromas of freshly made lemonade, tonic, nashi pear, aniseed and a squeeze of lime, segueing to an effortless linger. Very good drinking. 25 January 2024

Huon Hooke – Very light colour with a faint grey tint, the aroma subtle dried flowers/pot-pourri, the palate reserved and light, with a good backbone of tannin and acidity beautifully harmonised with the fruit flavour. Faint echoes of jasmine and spice. The balance is fairly dry, clean and crisply appetising. 28 January 2024

About this Wine

93 POINTS - Wine Pilot, Shanteh Wale
"Fermented on full solids in a combination of large format oak foudres, seasoned French oak puncheons, and stainless steel. It was then allowed to rest on lees for 4 months. Star jasmine, mock orange blooms and pomelo pith. Mangosteen, orchard apples and nashi pear. Fresh linen, greengage plum and white pepper. This wine has stayed true to its style from day dot with slight tinkering to sweetness levels and hue. It’s unapologetically Gris and filled with spice and all things nice. A lovely wash of natural moderate acidity and slight oily palate. A deserving pairing for Chinese strange flavour chicken or a fat turkey, brie sandwich. Drink now." 22 March 2024

The Other Wine Co. wines are vinified and bottled at the Shaw + Smith winery in Balhannah in South Australia's Adelaide Hills. The wines are 'other' because they give the winemakers the opportunity to make wines from varieties and/or regions that fall outside of Shaw + Smith's rigorous definition. Stylistically, the wines avoid over-ripeness, oak and power in preference to freshness, balance and overall drinkability. This is a cracker Pinot Gris. Made from Low yielding and handpicked fruit. The wine is cool fermented in stainless steel followed by four months on lees. The Other Wine Co Pinot Gris has classic stone fruit characteristics, is unmistakably Pinot Gris, and is a worthy contender in our 'Best Pinot Gris In Australia Series'. Seriously yum.

Adelaide Hills

The Adelaide Hills is one of the largest geographical wine regions in Australia, and amongst the most diverse in terms of climate, soil and topography. Because of this, many different varietals are planted here with the most dominant being Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It is generally thought of as a cooler region, especially when compared to neighbouring Barossa to the north and Mclaren vale and Langhorne Creek to the south.

NZ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc has been popular in Australia for a while now, but Adelaide hills Sauvignon Blanc (the most planted grape in the region) could be considered the Aussie Savvy Blanc. From www.adelaidehillswine.com.au about their Sauvignon Blanc: “Wines that are textured, edgy, vibrant and dry with exceptional fruit definition, length and crispness that marry superbly with summer seafood.”

You can also find some cool climate shiraz from the Adelaide hills, defying the more common big bold style that is usually seen in Australian Shiraz.
