About this Wine

A blend of fruit from the Stefano Lubiana Vineyard (Derwent Valley) and Lucille Vineyard (Huon Valley) The Derwent portion looked very good at harvest. It came off the Ruscello block which features loam over white/grey gravel. This portion was fermented with 100% whole bunches over 10 days. light foot plunges only. The Huon portion was a mix of clones from all over the vineyard, all destemmed and sorted to discard any berries left split or shrivelled from the rain. The intact fruit was very good. It underwent whole-berry fermentation over 10 days with only a few pumpovers. Barrel treatment of 20-25% new oak, all 228-litre barriques. I was originally going to make two single-terroir wines but the wine tasted better as a blend. After nine months’ maturation I racked and blended the Pinot Noir. This wine has the softness and elegant fruit of the Huon combined with the structure and spice of the Derwent. This approachable wine will drink well young.

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.
