James Halliday – A round of applause is warranted as this is the 50th consecutive vintage of cabernet sauvignon from Vasse Felix and the inaugural 1972 wine, Margaret River’s first cabernet. Now, while Tom Cullity, the wine, has morphed into the flagship, this is nonetheless an important wine. A bit like Wynns Black label, it’s what brings people to the wine, the region and more. While ’21 was a difficult season – unusually humid and warm – this is pristine. Florals, mulberries, menthol, pepper, choc-mint and oak spice with cedary inputs. This is medium bodied with powdery tannins and puckering acidity; all will settle in time. – Jane Faulkner
James Suckling – by James Suckling Plush aromas of blackcurrants, very herbs and flowers follow through to a medium body with firm, silky tannins and a fresh, vivid finish. Extremely fine-crafted and curated here. Drink and enjoy now, but it will improve. Screw cap.

"Elegant nose of supple cigar box, cedar and black fruit, savoury palate of caramel, dried leaf and plush dark fruit."
The individual batches were destemmed and sent as whole berries using only wild yeast residing on the fruit. Cabernet parcels were left on skins for 8-20 days to extract a fine backbone of tannins and blackcurrant laden fruit. Open top and use of aeration during fermentation helped to promote a clean fruit perfume, soften the tannins and bring life to the wine. The resulting wines were matured in fine French oak for 12 months prior to blending, with limited racking to help preserve the delicate wild characters captured in this low intervention approach. Bright deep maroon with a purple tint. Blackcurrant and dark cherry perfumes are complemented by savoury notes of miso, mushroom, dried oregano and forest twigs. Underlying hints of custard and charry, spicy oak round out the lovely aroma. On the palate it is tangy, bright black cherry fruit arrives on a pure, polished stone texture. This builds to a powdery, long, dry finish with lingering black forest cake flavours.

Margaret River Wine
In the southwest of Western Australia, the Margaret River wine region is unique in that it is the most maritime-influenced region in all of Australia. The cool Indian ocean breezes come in through the summer to keep the temperatures around the vines steady resulting in an unusually even accumulation of warmth in the growing season. It is also quite dry as interestingly less than 20% of the annual rainfall occurs as the grapes are growing. The region’s climatic factors have been compared to what Bordeaux would be like in a dry season. While the region’s total production is relatively small (3% of Australia’s total wine production), it is responsible for 20% of our premium wine market.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as Bordeaux blends are all very popular red wine options in the region.
For whites, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age worthy Chardonnays are the specialties.
