The Wine Front – The legacy continues for this premier rendition of the variety. Biodynamic farmed. Softer than expected, a bit plush, not untoward in that way but has some bandwidth to it. Lots of green mango, tonic water, kohlrabi, fig and fennel here. Good scents, good flavours, lots of the latter and a supple finish. Round and smooth. A medium weight white that does the variety great justice.

James Halliday – The first grüner veltliner planted in Australia, and, as such, the first of many. It has a touch of varietal white pepper and a counterbalance of elegantly rounded stone fruit. Also an early mover in using biodynamic principles.

James Suckling – Still quite yeasty in the smoky nose, but on the medium-bodied palate this is already open and expressive, with aromas of apple puree and preserved lemon. Although this is a lively dry white, there are plenty of fine tannins that deftly support this long, supple finish. A unique dry white that’s mostly a field blend based on gruner veltliner. Drink or hold. Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com 2023

James Suckling – “Full stone fruit aromas and a touch of ripe melon for a dry riesling that’s so sleek and racy. Wonderful balance in spite of the high acidity, giving this barely medium-bodied wine so much energy. Very long, samurai sword-like finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.” Stuart Pigott, jamessuckling.com

James Suckling – There’s a whole basket of yellow fruit here, including ripe apricot and King Alfonso mango, but there’s nothing loud about this beautiful high-end gruner veltliner, rather it opens slowly and steadily in the glass. Exact balance of ripeness and freshness, the latter accentuated by a note of tobacco leaf. Long and juicy, yet fresh and very precise finish that pulls you back for more. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. JamesSuckling.com 2022

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – The 2021 Loibner Grüner Veltliner Ried Loibenberg offers a fascinating, clear and pure, deep, intense and mineral-rich bouquet with just-ripe fruit but also grassy and herbal aromas with a hint of smoke, dates and tobacco leaves. Full-bodied yet vital and fresh on the palate, this is a rich and intense but also pure, refined and very elegant Loibenberg with a dense body uplifted by fine mineral acidity. It’s an impressive, stimulating, saline and refreshing mineral and herbal GV with a sustainable and complex finish. Absolutely gorgeous Loibenberg. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2022. Stephan Reinhardt, The Wine Advocate

Robert Parker/Wine Advocate – “Clear, fresh and with cool, spicy aromatics on the nose, the 2021 Ried Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is juicy and elegant on the palate with hints of iodine. With a compact and persistent structure and fine, crystalline acidity, this is an intensely juicy and aromatic Veltliner with a salty, spicy, extremely stimulating finish. James Suckling – Limey and lightly mineral nose showing a hint of oyster shell to the green limey citrus and green peppercorns. Chalky and limey on the textured, light- to medium-bodied palate with a subtle spicy verve looming in the middle. Mealy and nervy at the end with a crisp, mouthwatering finish.

Gruner Veltliner is Austria's flagship grape, accounting for a significant portion of the vineyards in the country. While it's most closely associated with the terraced vineyards of the Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal regions along the Danube River, its cultivation has spread to other parts of the world, driven by its increasing popularity among sommeliers and wine enthusiasts. One of the defining characteristics of Gruner Veltliner is its versatility. Depending on the terroir and winemaking techniques, it can range from light and crisp to rich and full-bodied. A common thread across all styles is the grape's characteristic white pepper note, often accompanied by flavors of green apple, citrus, and sometimes even hints of stone fruit. In addition to its intriguing flavor profile, Gruner Veltliner is also renowned for its food-pairing prowess. Its pronounced acidity and unique flavor profile make it a versatile partner for a range of dishes, from traditional Austrian schnitzels to Asian cuisines. This adaptability, combined with its distinctive taste, has cemented Gruner Veltliner's status as a favorite among those looking to venture beyond the more common white wine varieties.
Gruner Veltliner is an indigenous Austrian white grape variety that has garnered significant attention in the wine world. It's primarily grown in the Austrian regions of Wachau, Kamptal, and Kremstal, but its popularity has spread, with vineyards in the U.S., Australia, and New Zealand now producing this wine. Gruner Veltliner wines are characterized by their bright acidity, green and peppery notes, and often hints of citrus and stone fruits. Its versatility in style ranges from light and zesty to rich and full-bodied, making it an intriguing choice for wine enthusiasts.
While Austria remains the homeland of Gruner Veltliner, its expression varies across regions. The most popular wines come from Wachau, where they are classified into Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd based on their alcohol content and ripeness. These wines are celebrated for their pronounced minerality, peppery zest, and layers of complexity. Their growing appeal has placed them prominently on international wine lists, alongside iconic whites from around the globe.
Gruner Veltliner is diverse in its style spectrum. You can find young, fresh, and light versions with lively acidity and green apple notes, or more aged variants that lean into a fuller body with honeyed richness. Some are even made in a sparkling style, while others might undergo oak aging, adding depth and creamy texture. This adaptability is part of Gruner Veltliner's charm and the reason for its widespread acclaim.
Like any wine varietal, Gruner Veltliner wines come at various price points. While you can find exceptional bottles from prestigious vineyards that carry a heftier price tag, there are also numerous high-quality, affordable options available. Its rising popularity has led to increased production and a wider range of prices, ensuring there's a Gruner Veltliner for every budget.
Gruner Veltliner's vibrant acidity and green, peppery notes make it a versatile pairing choice. It excels alongside dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, fresh salads, sushi, and Asian cuisine, particularly where there's a touch of spice. Its zesty character complements seafood, while the richer, fuller-bodied versions can stand up to white meats and creamy sauces. Its adaptability at the dining table is yet another reason why Gruner Veltliner has become a favorite among sommeliers and food enthusiasts alike.
