Critic reviews

James Halliday – A pulpy wine of weight and swagger that, for me at least, defines exactly how merlot should be handled in this country: plenty of whole berries, gentle agitation and a well-placed curb of oak for compression. The result is floral, plummy and juicy, insouciant in a way and yet savoury enough for easy drinking with anise, mint and kirsch lining up across the succulent finish. Loads of fun. Best enjoyed with a slight chill. - Ned Goodwin MW

Description

Sourcing precious old vine survival plantings of the 1950s, and coupled with their non-interventional approach to winemaking, Longhop Wines found it’s provenance in handcrafting the lush, generous and full flavours of yesteryear. They create expressive wines showcasing, fruit, season and birth place.

Whole berry ferment in five ton open top fermenters with soft pump overs and minimal hand plunging. On skins for seven days, then basket pressed into young seasoned oak with ferment finishing off in barrel. Matured in French oak. Two rackings prior to blending and bottling.

Plenty of aromatics, with a rich palate filled with blackberry, dark chocolate and mocha. Drink now to 7+ years.

Barossa Valley Wine

The Barossa Valley wine region has historically and currently still is one of Australia's most prestigious premium wine producing regions. Located just 60km north east of Adelaide city centre, the climate there is very hot and dry which is perfect for the big bold reds the area is famous for.

A straight Shiraz is what Barossa is most well known for, however Rhone blends, such as Shiraz Cabernet are also very popular. While much less prevalent, white wines (Chardonnay, Riesling, Semillon) are planted on the higher altitude hillsides where the ocean breeze cools temperatures down to a level suitable for producing these varieties as well.

Some of Australia's earliest Shiraz plantings can be found here dating as far back as the 1850's. While not always a guarantee of quality, it might be worth seeking out and trying one of the region's "old vine shiraz" if you haven't yet.
