Tasting Notes: The 2022 Isabella is a highly fragrant pinot noir, its old vine fruits singing proudly with plenty of both blue fruits and flowers, ferrous earthy mineral depth and a little dried sage. The palate is quite youthful at this stage but riddled with complexities where the combination of the old vine D5V12 and MV6 components of the Coldstream site set the scene for this pinot that’s both pretty and structured. Again on the palate blueberries and plum fruits feature as do chestnut, suede tannins and cooling acidity that flows deliciously now but will reveal its full potential given a few years in the cellar.
Winemaking Notes: Hand-picked between 4th and 8th of March
Vinification & Elevage: Partially destemmed as whole berries, 50% of fruit fermented as whole clusters on skins for 3 weeks then pressed to French oak (20% new) for malolatic conversion, aged in oak for 10 months on lees prior to bottling. 139 dozen produced.
Viticultural Notes: Pinot Noir clones: D5V12 (Block 3), MV6 (Block 2) The fruit for this single vineyard wine is derived from Blocks 3 and 2 on our Hill Road Vineyard, planted in 1987, in Coldstream. 2022 will be remembered for the tiniest yields in a decade resulting from poor flowering conditions in our parts of the Yarra Valley. The quality of the resultant wines of this vintage however, are outstanding with both concentrations and finesse.

Yarra Valley Wine
The Yarra Valley wine region is the most important area of wine production in Victoria today, and with its proximity to Melbourne, also the most visited in the state.
Yarra Valley is split into the Upper Yarra and the valley floor. The Upper Yarra is cooler in climate due to its elevation and coupled with younger, fertile, red soils produces most of the region’s notable varietals: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The valley floor is warmer and has predominantly grey soils with pockets of granite and limestone.
Pinot noir has long been considered a notoriously difficult variety to grow. However, the cool climate and longer growing seasons of the Yarra Valley allow the fruit to develop full flavoured and ripe character.
Chardonnay in the past has long been associated with a deep oily, buttery style that experiences full malolactic fermentation and great amounts of oak. This style has since fallen out of favour and wine makers in the Yarra Valley have capitalized on this trend to produce leaner, acid driven Chardonnays that are closer in style to those from Burgundy.
