Critic reviews

James Halliday – From the Lower Derwent Valley; hand picked; up to 25% whole bunches; gentle hand plunging and occasional pumpovers. Matured 10 months in 25% new, large-format French oak. Crafted to an almost identical recipe to Lowestoft’s estate pinot, this vineyard delivers a more linear, strict and structured take on the Lower Derwent. Well-focused black and red berry cherry/berry fruits are confidently supported by fine-grained tannins that promise great things in a decade. - Tyson Stelzer, Halliday Wine Companion

Jacoben sits 8km north of Lowestoft on the northern side of the Derwent River. It faces south, which goes against everything the teach you at university about planting vineyards in the southern hemisphere! This site looks directly across the river to the Lubiana Vineyard and winery. Similar to Lowestoft, the soils are considered podzoic, with more sandstone and obvious alluvial contents. Quite significantly more free draining in nature than Lowestoft. Quite a lot cooler during the growing season also, as there is a fog called the “Bridgewater Jerry” which comes down the Derwent River and has quite the cooling effect. Very similar to Sonoma and Russian River in Northern California.

Superb Pinot Noir from the Jacoben Vineyard situated in the Lower Derwent Valley was handpicked and fermented in 1T open top fermenters, with up to 25% whole bunch inclusion. Gently hand plunged as required throughout fermentation, with gentle pressing to tank post mlf, followed by 10 months maturation in large format French oak (25% new) before selective barrel blending and bottling with minimal additions. – Liam McElhinney

Tasmanian Wine

The Tasmanian wine region is a cool climate region, the most southerly of all wine regions in Australia. Due to the lower temperatures, the area grows primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon.

“Having been to many wine tastings over the years, I can definitely say from a personal standpoint that Tasmanian Chardonnay and Pinot noir are always ones I look forward to trying if they are on the menu. They are almost always high calibre wines that can easily compete against what the rest of the world has to offer in these varietals.” Jason C. – World Wine.

While Tasmania makes great still wines, the exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir also make for excellent sparkling wines.

More recent vintages since 2005 have been positively impacted by the effects of global warming. With slightly higher temperatures the grapes are ensured to ripen fully and produce more vibrant wine.
