Read about Massena
Formed in 2000 by high school mates Dan Standish (of Torbreck and The Standish Wine Co fame) and Jaysen Collins (ex-Turkey Flat) Massena’s potent, edgy, fire-in-the-bosom early releases shook up the Barossa with their quality and interest. Today the wines are no less striking, although the boy’s penchant for wines of soaring aromatics, accessible balance and freshness has come through more and more as the years have passed. Working closely with a group of dedicated growers in the north-western sub-regions of Greenock, Kalimna and Koonunga Hill, D & J craft a stimulating set of classic Barossan wines from dry farmed, low yielding, ancient vines (up to 120 years of age) of Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache. They also celebrate the diversity of vines now grown in the Barossa (and have been pioneers doing so) by producing wines from varietals like; Petite Syrah, Primitivo, Saperavi and Tannat from their own experimental vineyard outside of Nuriootpa. Utilising the most authentic traditional techniques – basket pressing, open, native yeast ferments, and use of used French oak – their wines’ gutsy, intense personalities pay homage to their proud region while their silky textures, fine tannins and deliciousness perfectly reflect the desire of these two talented Barossans to produce wines of great drinkability and freshness. Whichever wine tickles your fancy, the results are always captivating.
