The 2020 Outshined Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits the elegance and complexity typical of Wilyabrup. Notes of briary blackcurrant, blackberry, cocoa, olives and dried herbs are engaging and alluring as the wine airs. Deeply coloured with some youthful purple the Outshined is medium weight, savoury and complex. Blackcurrant, dried sage, earth and olive notes are cradled in very fine yet layered powdery tannins with a note of subtle oak on the finish. I’d be matching this gem with earthy and hearty flavours, and our local venison chorizo would be ideal, especially sliced on the barbeque.

Margaret River Wine

In the southwest of Western Australia, the Margaret River wine region is unique in that it is the most maritime-influenced region in all of Australia. The cool Indian ocean breezes come in through the summer to keep the temperatures around the vines steady resulting in an unusually even accumulation of warmth in the growing season. It is also quite dry as interestingly less than 20% of the annual rainfall occurs as the grapes are growing. The region’s climatic factors have been compared to what Bordeaux would be like in a dry season. While the region’s total production is relatively small (3% of Australia’s total wine production), it is responsible for 20% of our premium wine market.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz as well as Bordeaux blends are all very popular red wine options in the region.
For whites, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age worthy Chardonnays are the specialties.

James Halliday – Wild ferment, 25 days on skins, 500L puncheons, 32% new oak. This is inky, cassis laden and littered with blackcurrant pastille. The tannins are open weave and pervasive, and shape the fruit in the mouth. This is an elegant, full expression of cabernet, with fine, chalky bones. There's pomegranate molasses and mulberry in there too somewhere ... yum. Very smart. - Erin Larkin, 20 June 2022
Huon Hooke – Crushed leaf and mulberry/cassis aromas, a good clean cabernet nose, albeit slightly on the greener side. It's medium bodied at most, with elegant sweet berry fruit flavour and mild but present tannins. Very attractive and approachable young. 4 February 2023
